Leavenworth Road Association prepares for opening day of lake

by Lou Braswell, Leavenworth Road Association executive director

Opening day for Wyandotte County Lake will be Saturday, March 4.

The gates will open at 6 a.m., and anglers usually get in line hours before that to be the first at their favorite fishing spot. Wyandotte County Parks will fill the lake with fish soon.

While the fish will be waiting to be caught, the Leavenworth Road Association will cook biscuits and sausage gravy at Davis Hall to feed the anglers and anyone who comes to the lake. It is one of the fundraisers for the Leavenworth Road Association.

Fundraisers help us continue our annual programs including the kids’ free fishing derby, lawn and small home repairs for senior citizens and the disabled, teen team, summer youth program, and the annual parade. Plus there are other projects through the year that are funded by the fundraisers.

Our next meeting will be Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day. We will give out hugs and kisses (the candy wrapped in tin foil). The meeting begins with a potluck dinner and social hour at 6 p.m., followed by the regular monthly meeting. The guest speaker this month will be David Mehlhaff from the Board of Public Utilities. The meeting is at Eisenhower Center, 2901 N. 72nd, Kansas City, Kan. The LRA meetings are open to the public.

Mark your calendar for the breakfast on March 4 at Davis Hall. On the menu are biscuits and gravy, coffee, juice or milk. Adult tickets are $10, children’s tickets are $5 for ages 12 and younger.
