Police request public’s assistance in I-70 shooting; victims identified

Kansas City, Kan., police are requesting the public’s assistance in the Christmas Eve shooting on I-70, west of the state line in Kansas City, Kan.

Two persons died from apparent gunshot wounds in this shooting, according to police.

They were identified as Socorro Olivas, 59, the driver, and Javier Ambriz, 54, a passenger. They were both residents of Kansas City, Kan.

Police responded to the area about 3 a.m. Dec. 24. They believe a sport utility vehicle was involved in an incident with an unknown vehicle while traveling west on I-70. The occupants of the unknown vehicle began shooting at the victims, killing both, according to police. The SUV struck the bridge before coming to rest in the middle of the bridge, police stated.

A passenger vehicle that was not involved in the shooting and was also traveling west struck the disabled vehicle according to police. The driver of the passenger car was taken to a hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Police have not received credible leads in this case and are asking anyone with knowledge of the shooting, or anyone who might have seen the vehicle stopped on the bridge to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
