Students, parents and teachers are planning to walk to school on Wednesday, Oct. 5, as part of International Walk to School Day.
Participating schools in Kansas City, Kan., include Grant, Frances Willard, Frank Rushton, Hazel Grove, William Allen White and Welborn elementaries.
Walk to School events work to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools and the broader community, according to a spokesman.
The event is being organized metro-wide by Mid-America Regional Council and coordinated locally by the Wyandotte County Safe Routes to School Program, which includes the Unified Government’s Public Works and Health Departments, BikeWalkKC, and other community partners.
