Three community forums planned on KCKPS bond issue
Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools is sponsoring three community forums at Kansas City, Kan., Public Library branches to discuss the new proposed no-tax increase bond referendum, which will be on the Nov. 8 ballot. These forums:
• Oct. 3, West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd St., at 6 p.m.
• Oct. 10, South Branch Library, 3104 Strong Ave., 6 p.m.
• Oct. 20, Main Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., 6 p.m.
This bond referendum will allow the district to make improvements to every school, and build four new ones, all with no increase in taxes for community residents, a spokesman said. The public is invited to attend a forum to learn more about the bond issue.

‘Stay Strong, Stay Healthy’ program offered
The “Stay Strong, Stay Healthy” program will focus on improving the health and well-being of older adults. The goal of the program is to provide a safe, structured and effective strength training exercise program that targets strength, balance and flexibility. Providence 5K race Oct. 8 to benefit YMCA
Providence Medical Center and the YMCA of Greater Kansas City will hold a Rock, Roll and Run Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Providence Medical Center Amphitheater, 633 N. 130th St., Bonner Springs, Kan. Proceeds benefit the Providence YMCA/Ball Family Center’s Cancer Survivorship program, as well as the YMCA scholarship program. “We’re excited to partner with the YMCA to present this family-friendly event,” said Dr. Prashanth Katrapati, a Providence Medical Center cardiologist. “This is an opportunity for the community to take part in a running/walking event, learn more about the health and wellness programs Providence and the Y offer to promote health and fitness, and enjoy entertainment from some favorite local bands.” The family-friendly activities begin Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Providence Medical Center Amphitheatre with a 5K walk-run though Wyandotte Park at 8:30 a.m., followed by a Kids Run around the amphitheater at 10 a.m. Registration Sept. 9 through Oct. 7 is $30, and day-of-race registration is $35 at the event. ‘Understanding Relationships’ to be presented Oct. 9 at Bonner Springs Library
“Understanding Relationships” will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Bonner Springs Public Library, 201 N. Nettleton Ave., Bonner Springs. There is no charge for the program. Richard D. Bates, marriage and family therapist from the Center for Family Healing, will present the program and will talk about topics such as intimacy, family and marital discord, parenting, community and dealing with crisis. Bates is a U.S. Army veteran who trained as a marriage and family therapist in collaboration with Friends University and Christ First Counseling Center in Topeka. He holds a master of science in marriage and family therapy, as well as a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and years of experience as a registered nurse in the intensive care unit and mental health.

Medicare open enrollment event to be Oct. 17
U.S. Rep. Kevin Yoder, R-3rd Dist., will be the host of two Medicare open enrollment assistance events in October. The events will help provide information for seniors during the Medicare open enrollment period, a spokesman said. The first event will be from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Oct. 17, at Kansas City Kansas Community College Technical Education Center, 6565 State Ave. The second event will be from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Shawnee Town Hall. Trained volunteers from the Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas (SHICK) program will be on hand at the event to provide one-on-one assistance to seniors who have questions, or who wish to make changes to their plans. The Medicare Open Enrollment Period extends from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7. Medicare beneficiaries who wish to make changes or enroll for the first time need to bring their Medicare card, any current prescriptions (including dosage and frequency), and a list of preferred pharmacies. Cowboy poet and folklorist to speak Oct. 19 at Bonner Springs Library
Jim Hoy, cowboy poet and folklorist, will be featured at a program Oct. 19 at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton Ave., Bonner Springs. He will discuss “Kansas Legends and Folktales” in a program sponsored by the Kansas Humanities Council. Exaggerated narratives and tall tales, such as stories about grasshoppers so big that cowboys could ride them, help people understand the character of the state and its people, according to the author. Hoy will appear at 6 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Bonner Springs City Library. The program is free and open to the public.
Third District Job Fair to be Oct. 27
U.S. Rep. Kevin Yoder, R-3rd Dist., has announced that the Third District Job Fair will be held on Thursday, Oct. 27, at the Kansas City Kansas Community College Burke Technical Education Center, 6565 State Ave. The job fair will facilitate face-to-face meetings between those seeking employment and local employers who are currently hiring. The job fair includes a special morning hour exclusively for veterans. The hours of the job fair are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 27. The 9 to 10 a.m. hour is open exclusively to veterans. Boo Bash Halloween Party to be Oct. 29
