Standoff at 57th and Parallel ends without injury

Kansas City, Kan., police have ended a standoff about 2 p.m. at 57th and Parallel Parkway.

According to a statement from the police department spokesman, commanders on the scene decided that the severity of the warrants did not outweigh the possibility of injury to innocent residents or the public.

“The Police Department deescalated the situation and withdrew from the scene,” the police statement said.

The U.S. Marshals Service was trying to serve two warrants on a man in a house in the 5700 block of Parallel Parkway this morning, the spokesman said. The man refused to come out of the house and was making threats toward officers, the police spokesman said. The Kansas City, Kan., police were called to assist the U.S. Marshals.

“For several hours we attempted to have an open dialogue with the individual and even attempted non-forceful tactics to have them exit the residence,” the police spokesman stated.

The spokesman said the warrants for the man are still active. They include a parole violation for aggravated indecent liberties with a minor and failure to register as a sex offender, the spokesman said.

The police asked anyone with information to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
