The main weather hazard this week will be the soaring temperatures and oppressive heat indices, according to the National Weather Service.
The heat advisory now has been increased to an excessive heat warning from 1 p.m. today through 10 p.m. July 21.
High temperatures will likely reach well into the 90s each day with heat index values exceeding the century mark in many locations, the weather service said.
Storm chances return again tonight for portions of the region, according to the weather service. Wyandotte County was not part of the area predicted for the storm. While the severe threat is low, some storms may have the potential to become strong, containing gusty winds, hail, dangerous cloud to ground lightning, and moderate to locally heavy rainfall.
Heat indices this afternoon will range from near the century mark across the region to the mid-100s. The values are expected to increase as the week progresses, perhaps approaching the 110 mark toward the latter half of the week, the weather service said.
The weather service advised residents to reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening, to wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out o the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors.
Today will be sunny with a high near 95, and a heat index value as high as 104, the weather service said. An east wind of 6 to 10 mph will become south southwest in the morning. Tonight, the low will be around 75.
Tuesday, it will be mostly sunny with a high near 94, according to the weather service. The heat index will be as high as 102, and there will be a south southwest wind of 5 to 13 mph. Tuesday night, the low will be around 77.
