The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for Wyandotte County and surrounding areas because of hot and dry conditions today that could lead to heightened fire weather.

Temperatures will climb into the low to mid 90s today through Monday, the weather service said. Increased humidity across the region combined with the hot temperatures will allow for muggy conditions with heat indices reaching the mid to upper 90s Friday through at least Sunday, according to the weather service.

The lack of moisture recently, along with gusty southwest winds and relative humidity values in the upper 30s to low 40s, mean an increased fire danger, according to the weather service.

The recent dry spell means surface fuels are close to reaching critical fuel moisture levels, according to the weather service. Gusty southwest winds will enhance fire weather potential today, but relative humidity values are expected to remain above critical levels, the weather service said.

However, given an ignition source, the dry fuels and gusty winds will allow any fire that ignites to burn readily, according to the weather service. Increased relative humidity and light winds will limit fire weather concerns heading into and through the weekend, the weather service said.

Today, expect sunny skies with a high of 91, the weather service said, along with a south southwest wind of 7 to 16 mph, gusting as high as 25 mph.

Tonight, the low will be around 70 with a south wind of 8 to 13 mph, according to the weather service.

Friday, there will be sunny skies, a high of 91 and a south southwest wind of 9 to 15 mph, gusting to 21 mph, according to the weather service. Friday night, the low will be around 72, with a south wind of 7 to 11 mph.

Friday night, the low will be around 72 with a south wind of 7 to 11 mph, according to the weather service.

Saturday, it will be sunny with a high near 92, the weather service said, and a south southwest wind of 8 to 11 mph.

Saturday night, look for mostly clear skies with a low of 73, according to the weather service.

Sunday, expect a high of 92 with sunny skies, the weather service said. Sunday night, the low will be around 74.

Monday, rain returns to the forecast. There is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a high of 90, the weather service said.
