A flash flood warning is in effect until 11 p.m. for Wyandotte County as well as some surrounding counties, according to the National Weather Service.
Thunderstorms were producing heavy rain around 6 p.m. over the warning area with nearly 4 inches of rain reported near the Kansas City International Airport, the weather service said.
Mike Tobin, the Unified Government acting public works director, reported to the commission tonight that water pollution crews have been working heavily on flooded streets.
He also said there were UG public works crews working to clear several trees down as a result of the storm.
The weather service reported there were evacuations of some apartments in the Ferrelview Village area in Platte County. Flash flooding is expected to continue.
The weather service urged residents to turn around and not try to drive through flooded roads.
Besides the flash flood warning, Wyandotte County also is under a tornado watch until 10 p.m.
