Preparations are underway for the 32nd annual Polski Day celebration, to be Saturday, May 7, at All Saints Church, 8th and Vermont, Kansas City, Kan.
Ladies of the church have been working in advance to prepare 2,000 Polish tea cookies, and prepare other Polish food for the event.
The event kicks off with a parade at 11 am. May 7 at 14th and Central Avenue. The Polski Day festival is from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. at All Saints parish, 8th and Vermont. A Mass will be held in conjunction with the festival at 4 p.m. May 7 at All Saints Church.
Wyandotte County District Attorney Jerry Gorman will lead the traditional parade. The parade route will travel east on Central Avenue to 8th Street, then go the wrong way on a one-way street to Vermont, ending at the church.
Music and entertainment will start at the festival around noon, and Polish food such as golambki, pierogi, Polish sausage, and powitica, will be available.
“Polski Day festivities include activities for babies to seniors, and 100 percent of the funds raised benefit All Saints Church, formerly known as St. Joseph-St. Benedict Church,” said Cathy Kolenda-Smith, Polski Day Committee member. “Polski Day has always been a day to celebrate our Polish heritage and support the Church.”
Polski Day, is held annually on the first week in May to commemorate the signing of the Polish Constitution of Freedom on May 3, 1791. Polish-Americans settled on Polish Hill, located north of Interstate 70 and west of 7th Street Trafficway, in Kansas City, Kan., where generations have carried on the proud heritage of their forefathers’ homeland, in Wyandotte County.
Famous Polish leaders have included Pope John Paul II, considered by many as one of the most influential leaders of the 20th Century, who was canonized on April 27, 2014, and through his endeavors strengthened Christianity throughout the world. Other Polish leaders include Casimir the Great, Copernicus, Chopin, Kosciuzsko, Madam Sklodowska-Curie, Marshal Jozef Pilsudski and Lech Walesa, and KCK baseball player, Ray Sadecki, who was inducted into the Polish-American Hall of Fame.
Saturday’s event will include Polish artifacts on display in the Parish Hall, and Polski Day T-shirts and items for sale. There will be a handmade Polish quilt crafted by a parishioner.
