Baker re-sentenced to prison

Terran J. Baker was sentenced to 7.6 years (92 months) in prison on March 3 for the Oct. 24, 2010, shooting death of Bernard Love and the injury of another person in the 1500 block of North 23rd Street in Kansas City, Kan.

Baker is required to register as a violent offender upon release and to pay $5,000 in restitution.

Baker entered a plea of guilty on June 20, 2012, to one count of voluntary manslaughter and one count of aggravated battery on June 20, 2012.

Baker was sentenced to 8.5 years (102 months) in prison on Aug. 27, 2012. Thereafter, the Kansas Supreme Court ruling in State v. Murdock gave rise to many sentencing appeals and Baker sought relief under a new rule of criminal history classification.

The Wyandotte County District Attorney litigated in the Court of Appeals to preserve the original sentence, however on Dec. 11, 2015, a three judge panel ruled that Baker must be resentenced.

Judge Bill L. Klapper heard the re-sentencing hearing ordered by the Court of Appeals and imposed the 92-month sentence. The case was investigated by the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department and prosecuted by Chief Deputy District Attorney Ed Brancart.
