KCKCC women, 21-2, in pivotal home games Wednesday, Saturday

Kansas City Kansas Community College’s seeding in the Region VI women’s Division II playoffs will almost certainly be decided over the next 10 days.

Home against fourth place Hesston (3-3) Wednesday at 5 p.m., the No. 8 ranked Lady Blue Devils (3-2) will play host to No. 7 Highland Saturday at 2 p.m. and then go to No. 1 Johnson County Wednesday. While KCKCC and Hesston will be squaring off for undisputed possession of third place, JCCC (23-0) will be the host of Highland (21-1) in a battle for first place in Overland Park.

Playing their second game in 26 hours following a lengthy road trip Sunday didn’t slow the Lady Blue Devils in an 84-22 win over William Penn JV in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Ahead 16-2 after one quarter, the Blue Devils gave up only five field goals in posting their fifth straight win and 21st in 23 starts this season.

Sophomore Cheyenne North had her 10th double double of the season with game highs of 18 points and 14 rebounds while freshman Brooklyn Wagler had her fifth with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Valencia Scott added 12 points, Sierra Roberts 10, Erin Anderson 9 and Brie Tauai 8 for KCKCC, which led 33-7 at the half.

The Region VI playoffs will begin Saturday, Feb. 27. The top two teams in each division will receive byes with the third and four place finishers being the hosts for the fifth and sixth place teams. The seventh place team will not be playoff eligible. The top two teams then will serve as hosts for semifinal games Tuesday, March 2, with the championship game and a berth in the NJCAA Division II national tournament at Hartman Arena near Wichita Thursday, March 4.
