Volunteers needed to teach English
The Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan., which is closed Dec. 21 – Jan. 1, and reopens Jan. 4, needs volunteers to teach English. Volunteers may devote 1.5 hours each week, which varies with the volunteer’s schedule. Materials and training are provided. Classes are held at library locations convenient for teacher and student. Kansas poet laureate to appear at Bonner Springs library
Kansas poet laureate Eric McHenry will speak and read from his work on Tuesday, Jan. 5, at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton Ave., Bonner Springs, Kan. The event starts at 6 p.m. It is free and open to the public. Registration is not required. McHenry, of Lawrence, is a nationally known poet and associate professor of English at Washburn University in Topeka, according to his biographical information on the Kansas Humanities Council website. He also is an associate professor of English at Washburn University, Topeka. He has won several awards for his poetry. “Potscrubber Lullabies,” his first book, earned the Kate Tufts Discovery Award in 2007. “Odd Evening,” his third book of poems, will be published by Waywiser Press in 2016.
NAACP branch to meet Jan. 5
The Kansas City, Kan., Branch NAACP will meet Tuesday, Jan. 5, at the Bethany Medical Building, second floor meeting room, 21 N. 12th St., Kansas City, Kan. The executive meeting will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the general membership meeting at 7 p.m. All members are encouraged to attend. The agenda will include setting the agenda for 2016.
Legislators to hold community forum Jan. 5 at library
The Wyandotte County Legislative Delegation will hold a community forum at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, at the West Wyandotte Branch Library, community room, 1737 N. 82nd, Kansas City, Kan. The public may attend and discuss legislative issues with the local legislators before this year’s legislative session starts. Legislators plan to return to Topeka to start the session on Monday, Jan. 11.

Eagle Days planned Jan. 23-24 at Wyandotte County Lake
The 15th annual Eagle Days event is planned Jan. 23-24 at Wyandotte County Lake. The event will be held at two locations, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 24, at the Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library at the lake; and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, at Davis Hall at the lake. Birds of prey presentations will be held at both locations. Those presentations are at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m on Saturday, and 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday. Operation Wildlife will have live birds of prey on exhibit, including owls, hawks, falcons and eagles, and will give presentations that talk about the birds and their natural history. There will be crafts for kids, and eagle and waterfowl viewing over the lake. The event is free and open to the public.
Child-adult relationship enrichment program offered
The Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., will offer Child-Adult Relationship Enrichment (C.A.R.E.) in three parts, beginning Jan. 25. The program is offered on three Mondays from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. from Jan. 25 to Feb. 8. It is presented by Michelle Bertuglia-Haley, MSW, LSCSW, LCSW, Child and Family Therapy Team of Children’s Mercy. Certificates of attendance will be given out at the end of three sessions.
