Strawberry Hill Museum open on weekends
The Strawberry Hill Museum, 720 N. 4th St., Kansas City, Kan., is open on the weekends. The museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The admission charge is $7 for adults, $3 for children 6 to 12, and free for children under 6. Special tours are available during the week for groups of 20 or more by calling 913-721-0081. Wyandotte County Museum open
The Wyandotte County Museum, 631 N. 126th St., Bonner Springs, is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. It is closed on Sundays and holidays. Renaissance Festival continues
The Renaissance Festival will continue Sunday, Oct. 18, near 126th and State in Bonner Springs. Gates open at 10 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, each festival day, rain or shine. Pirates Ale Fest is the theme of the weekend, with a tattoo competition, pirate games and contests, craft beer tastings, best beard competition, trick-or-treating, free arts and crafts for kids, costume contest and eating contest. KCKCC play to be presented Sunday
“Anything Goes,” a musical, is at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at the KCKCC Performing Arts Center, 7250 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for non-KCKCC students and senior citizens. The musical is free to all KCKCC students, staff and faculty with a valid KCKCC I.D. KCK school board to meet Oct. 19
The Kansas City, Kan., Board of Education has called a special meeting for 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, at the Central Office, third floor board room, 2010 N. 59th St., Kansas City, Kan. Book sale returns to KCKCC
The “My Shelf to Yours” Book Sale returns to Kansas City Kansas Community College Oct. 20- 22 in Room 2325 on the lower level of the Jewell building on the KCKCC campus, 7250 State Ave. The sale is from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 20 and 22, and 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 21. All books will be $1 or seven books for $5. Proceeds will be placed into a student scholarship fund for textbooks and tuition for those in financial need. Pink celebration for breast cancer awareness month planned at Legends Outlets Oct. 21
The University of Kansas Cancer Center is celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month and National Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day Oct. 21 with an event at the Legends Outlets, 1843 Village West Parkway, Kansas City, Kan. From 5 to 7 p.m. in the Civic Courtyard Fountain, this free, fun family event includes a special ceremony at 6 p.m. It is open to the public. Other activities include skin care product giveaways, free drawings for facials, breast screening information, face painting, kids activities, a photo booth and light refreshments. Harlem Book Fair coming to KCK on Oct. 24
Two community advocacy organizations are joining to bring the Harlem Book Fair to Kansas City, Kan., to promote literacy and cross-cultural dialogue. The Kansas City, Kan., NAACP and El Centro, which are African-American and Hispanic community advocacy organizations, the Harlem Book Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Reardon Civic Center, 5th and Minnesota Avenue, Kansas City, Kan. The day-long event will feature nationally acclaimed writers and community-based Kansas City authors and artists in author readings, music, children’s storytelling, and art presentations. KCKCC’s 4.0 Gala to be Oct. 24
The Kansas City Kansas Community College 4.0 Gala is Oct. 24 at Lake Quivira. The fundraising event includes an auction. The evening begins with a reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. The program begins at 8 p.m. During the program, two awards will be given. Former mayor of Bonner Springs, Clausie Smith, will receive the Wyandotte Countian of the Year, and Bishop Ervin Sims Jr. will receive the KCKCC Distinguished Alumni Award. Workshop offered on chronic conditions
“Take Control of Your Chronic Condition,” a workshop, will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. every Monday for six weeks, starting Oct. 26. Annual Wyandotte County Veterans Day commemoration to be Nov. 7
The annual Wyandotte County Veterans Day commemoration will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Salvation Army Harbor Light Village, 6723 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The event is presented by the Kansas City, Kan., Women’s Chamber of Commerce. This year’s event, from 10 a.m. to noon, will include a special recognition of Vietnam War veterans, on the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. Groups expected to participate in the event include the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department Drum and Pipe Corps, Piper High School Music in Motion and Salvation Army Music Ensemble. There will be special speakers, veteran resources, commemorative displays, free giveaways and a brunch. Partners and sponsors of the event include the Kansas City, Kan., Convention and Visitors Bureau, Kansas City, Kan., Public Library, VFW Post 6401 and auxiliaries, Wyandotte County Museum, Providence Medical Center and Salvation Army Harbor Light Village.

Sebelius to speak at United Way of Wyandotte County annual luncheon Nov. 20
Former Gov. Kathleen Sebelius will speak at the annual luncheon Nov. 20 of the United Way of Wyandotte County. Sebelius also is the former U.S. secretary of Health and Human Services. “Looking Forward: Improving Health and Quality of Life in Wyandotte County,” is the topic. The luncheon will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Reardon Convention Center, 5th and Minnesota, Kansas City, Kan.
