Police dog separates woman from gun

A police dog was used today to separate a woman from a handgun and take her into custody in the 3200 block of Everett Avenue.

Police said they went to the location at 1:40 p.m. Sept. 6 and found a woman in her 30s who was armed with a handgun in her backyard. She was threatening to harm herself, police said.

Officers set up a perimeter and police negotiators arrived to speak with the woman. After a short standoff, the police tactical team deployed its K-9 to separate the woman from the weapon and take her into custody, the spokesman said.

The woman sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for medical attention, police said.

The incident is under investigation by the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division.
