Strawberry Hill Museum open on weekends
The Strawberry Hill Museum, 720 N. 4th St., Kansas City, Kan., is open on the weekends. The museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The admission charge is $7 for adults, $3 for children 6 to 12, and free for children under 6. Special tours are available during the week for groups of 20 or more by calling 913-721-0081. Mayor’s Listening Tour to be Aug. 25 at Wyandotte High School
Mayor Mark Holland’s Listening Tour next will visit District 4 at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 25 at Wyandotte High School, 2501 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. UG Commission to meet Aug. 27

Memory to be topic of programs
“The Master of Memory Series,” a four-week series for men and women, will be presented on Tuesdays, Sept. 1 through 22, at Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The program will be from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Topics include memory strategies, nutrition and memory function, medications and memory, how medical conditions affect memory, exercise for mind and body. The program was created by Texas A&M Extension Services. NAACP to meet Sept. 1
The Kansas City, Kan., Branch NAACP will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at the Bethany Medical Center second floor meeting room, 21 N. 12th St., Kansas City, Kan. Downtown Labor Day Festival planned Sept. 5
A Downtown KCK Labor Day Festival celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month is scheduled Sept. 5 starting with a parade at 11 a.m. and a festival at 1 p.m. The parade begins on Minnesota Avenue. The festival includes a mini carnival, live bands, activities for children, face painting, clowns, food and entertainment. Admission is free. The event is sponsored by Bonito Michoacan.

Card-making workshop planned

Free workshop to be presented on Social Security disability
A free workshop, “Understanding Social Security Disability: Guide on Processes and Approval,” will be presented from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, at the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd, Kansas City, Kan. United Way plans fall campaign kickoff at the golf course
The United Way of Wyandotte County is planning a fall campaign kickoff luncheon in conjunction with a golf tournament on Sept. 10 at Painted Hills Golf Course, 7101 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kan. The event begins with a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. followed by the golf tournament at 1:30 p.m. The cost of the luncheon is $20 per person or $150 for a table of eight persons. Those who play golf will pay $125 per person, which includes the luncheon, golf with cart, a Live United T-shirt and the awards reception. There are prizes for first, second and third place, the long drive, and there is a putting contest. Sponsors are needed. Fairfax Festival planned Sept. 10
The Fairfax Festival will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at Kaw Point Park, 1400 Fairfax Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Registration is now open for the festival, which will include live music, a beer – wine, garden, a cookout, and a lawn game tournament. Those attending may bring lawn chairs. The charge for food will be $15 per person. Admission to the beer-wine garden will cost $10. The Fairfax Industrial Association is taking reservations that are submitted on a completed form. Day of free family fun planned with Library in the Park
The Kansas City, Kan., Public Library is holding its first outdoor festival, Library in the Park. It’s a day of free, family fun featuring live music, food, and activities. Library in the Park will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 12 at Big Eleven Lake in Kansas City, Kan. Library in the Park is completely free and will include activities for all ages. The downtown festivities begin at 9:30 a.m. with DashKCK, a 5K run-walk held by the Downtown Shareholders and Donnelly College.Starting at 10 a.m., there will be performances from local bands and dancers including Rosie’s Dance Academy, AY Musik, Trio Aztlan, and The Grisly Hand. Activities will include storytime, face painting, crafts, demonstrations of library digital collections, book recommendations, and more. Attendees will also get to visit the Mobile Library to sign up for a card and check out items. Library in the Park will also include a taco competition with local KCK taquerias Bonito Michoacan, Carniceria la Siete, Ninfa’s, and Con Sabor a Mexico. Attendees will get a chance to sample tacos from all four locations and vote on which taco is the best. Those who vote in the contest will be entered to win a Samsung Galaxy Tablet. TedxWyandotte event to be Sept. 15
The TedxWyandotte event scheduled for Saturday at Kansas City Kansas Community College has been postponed and rescheduled. The event will now be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, at KCKCC, 7250 State Ave. It will feature approximately six presenters speaking on the theme of “Breaking Through: Confronting the barriers that divide us and challenging ourselves to move beyond them.” Tickets already purchased will be valid for the new date in September. Bishop Ward plans 37th annual auction

Bishop Ward High School, 708 N. 18th St., Kansas City, Kan., is planning its annual auction Sept. 26. The event kicks off at 5:30 p.m. and will have a “There’s No Place Like Ward” theme. It will include a silent auction as well as food from several local restaurants and live music. At 7:30 p.m., the live auction begins. The Nigro Brothers will be in charge of the live auction.
