UG Commission expected to vote tonight on economic development projects

The Unified Government Commission is scheduled to take up some economic development projects at tonight’s meeting.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Commission Chambers, lobby level, City Hall, Kansas City, Kan.

There also is a 5 p.m. special session scheduled at 5 p.m. Aug. 13 in the ninth floor conference room at City Hall. It will be a closed, executive session on litigation and labor.

The agenda for the 7 p.m. meeting includes:

– Public hearing and a vote to consider amendments to a STAR bond district plan at the Vacation Village (Schlitterbahn) area, and issue bonds for a development area including a new auto mall project near 98th and Parallel Parkway. – A public hearing and ordinance to create a community improvement district for a new Turner Commerce Center area at the Turner Diagonal area, south of I-70 and Riverview, also known as the Turner Woods project. – A public hearing and ordinance to establish the 57th and State redevelopment TIF (tax-increment financing) district.

– An ordinance to issue $12 million in taxable industrial revenue bonds for Premier Automotive of Kansas City. About $12 million in taxable IRBs by SVVI (Schlitterbahn Vacation Village I) would be assigned to Premier Automotive for the construction of three new auto dealerships near the 98th and Parallel Parkway area. There is no tax abatement with this project.

– Grant applications for camera equipment for law enforcement investigations, including body cameras, with no local funding committed.

– Grant applications for two deputies and one detective in the offender registration unit.

– Grant application for victims services unit in the police department. The local match amount is $53,750.

– Amendments to ordinances about weapons to update them because of state law changes.

– Amendments to ordinances about traffic, to update them to comply with state statutes concerning driving while intoxicated and other changes to state laws.

– Amendments to the ordinance on security guard permits, changing the requirement on testing and qualifying for firearms to comply with changes in state laws.

– A request for a Sheriff’s Department Memorial to be built in the northeast side of the Wyandotte County Courthouse. Fraternal Order of Police 40 will fund the memorial, and the UG would assist with sidewalk and footing costs.
