Strawberry Hill Museum open on weekends
The Strawberry Hill Museum, 720 N. 4th St., Kansas City, Kan., is open on the weekends. The museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The admission charge is $7 for adults, $3 for children 6 to 12, and free for children under 6. Special tours are available during the week for groups of 20 or more by calling 913-721-0081. Piper school district to hold budget hearing Aug. 10
The Piper Public Schools has scheduled a budget hearing at the Board of Education meeting Aug. 10. The budget hearing will be at 6:15 p.m. at the district office, 3130 N. 122nd St., Kansas City, Kan. The regular meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. The 2015-2016 Piper School District budget will have no mill levy increase.
KCK school board to meet Aug. 11
The Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools Board of Education is scheduled to meet at 5 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Central Office, 2010 N. 59th St., Kansas City, Kan. The meeting will include a budget hearing at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 11. An agenda should be posted on the district’s website, www.kckps.org, before the meeting.
BPU August meeting date changed to Aug. 12
The August date for the Board of Public Utilities meeting has been changed to Wednesday, Aug. 12, instead of Aug. 5. The regular meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the BPU administrative offices, 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. It is open to the public.
Public hearing planned Aug. 12 on solid waste plan
The Unified Government of Wyandotte County-Kansas City, Kan., Public Works Department will be holding a public hearing for the purpose of discussing the five-year update of the Wyandotte County Solid Waste Management Plan for 2015. The public hearing will be held at 3 p.m. Aug. 12 at the Unified Government Neighborhood Resource Center’s large meeting room, 4953 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan. All persons desiring to be heard with reference to the proposed five-year update of the Wyandotte County Solid Waste Management Plan will be heard at the public meeting.
Book sale Aug. 13-15 to benefit Bonner Springs Library
The quarterly book sale at Bonner Springs Library, 201 N. Nettleton, will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday.Many new additions since the four-hour sale in July are available including a great number of young adult and western novels. Nothing costs more than $1 with bargains as low as 25 cents. Specials will be posted each day, come and discover a new author or a like-new volume by one of your favorites.

Household hazardous waste collection to be Aug. 15
Household hazardous waste collection days for Wyandotte County residents will be Aug. 15, Sept. 19 and Oct. 17 at 2443 S. 88th St., Kansas City, Kan. The hours are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. those Saturdays. The site is at South 88th Street from K-32 or east of I-435 using Woodend exit near the Kaw River. Items should be labeled or identified. Items that are accepted include tires (a limit of 10 tires, with rims removed), motor oil, batteries, antifreeze, degreasers, paints, varnishes, solvents, lawn and garden insecticides and pesticides, and household cleaning products.
Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast planned Aug. 15
The Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast will meet this Saturday, Aug. 15, at Las Islas Marias, 7516 State Ave. Kansas Democratic Party Chairman Larry Meeker will be the speaker. The breakfast buffet will be available at 8:15 a.m. and the program will begin at 9:15. The cost for the breakfast is $10, or $7 for students and those on limited incomes. All Democrats are invited to attend.

Rear admiral to speak at scholarship award meeting of KCK Women’s Chamber
Rear Admiral Rebecca McCormick-Boyle will be the guest speaker at the Wednesday, Aug. 19, meeting of the Kansas City, Kan., Women’s Chamber of Commerce. McCormick-Boyle is the commander of Navy Medicine Education and Training. She also serves as the Navy Nurse Corps director. The program will include scholarship awards. The KCK Women’s Chamber will award four scholarships this year. Recipients are Kendra Lawrence, Cecilia Ndungu, Lacy Davidson and Melissa Cooper. A fundraiser will be held, with donations going to the scholarship fund. The meeting will begin with networking at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 19 at Kansas City Kansas Community College Technical Education Center, 6565 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Lunch and the program will be from noon to 1 p.m. The cost for lunch is $20 for members, $25 for nonmembers and $15 for students. TedxWyandotte event to be Sept. 15
The TedxWyandotte event scheduled for Saturday at Kansas City Kansas Community College has been postponed and rescheduled. The event will now be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, at KCKCC, 7250 State Ave. It will feature approximately six presenters speaking on the theme of “Breaking Through: Confronting the barriers that divide us and challenging ourselves to move beyond them.” Tickets already purchased will be valid for the new date in September. Bishop Ward plans 37th annual auction
Bishop Ward High School, 708 N. 18th St., Kansas City, Kan., is planning its annual auction Sept. 26. The event kicks off at 5:30 p.m. and will have a “There’s No Place Like Ward” theme. It will include a silent auction as well as food from several local restaurants and live music. At 7:30 p.m., the live auction begins. The Nigro Brothers will be in charge of the live auction.
