An excessive heat warning is in effect today until 9 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

One more day of hazardous heat is anticipated today with a high of 96, and heat index of 104, the weather service said.

Today also will have a south southwest wind of 8 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph, according to the weather service.

A cold front will bring showers and thunderstorms to the region tonight, starting in far northern Missouri late this afternoon and spreading into eastern Kansas after midnight, the weather service said. The possibility of storms will be greatest from 1 a.m. to 4 a.m.

A few storms could produce locally heavy rainfall, gusty winds and hail, according to the weather service.

Seasonable temperatures and lower humidity will spread into the area Wednesday through Friday, the weather service said.

Residents are advised today to take extra precautions if they work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothes when possible and drink plenty of water.

Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency, call 911.

An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures will occur. The combination of high temperatures and humidity creates a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely. Residents are advised to stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check on relatives and neighbors.

Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances, the weather service said. This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

Cooling centers throughout the county should open today. For a list of the centers, visit https://wyandotteonline.com/cooling-centers-open-this-afternoon/.
