Excessive heat warning issued for Friday afternoon

The National Weather Service has increased its level of concern for extremely hot temperatures on Friday.

An excessive heat warning is in effect from 11 a.m. Friday, until 9 p.m. Friday, according to the weather service.

A heat advisory also is in effect from 9 p.m. Friday to 9 p.m. Saturday, according to the weather service.

Friday’s temperatures may top out at 96, with a heat index approaching 110, the weather service said.

Saturday, the high will be 95 with a heat index as much as 106, the weather service said.

On Friday night and Saturday, there is a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms.

Residents are advised to stay out of the heat, seek air-conditioned and shaded areas, drink plenty of water and check on their neighbors and the elderly.

Sunday’s high is predicted to be 92, with a 30 percent chance of storms.

Today, the temperature was 88 degrees at 3 p.m., with a heat index of 95.
