Parade of Heroes scheduled July 7

The 9th annual Parade of Heroes is scheduled July 7 in the Village West area of Kansas City, Kan.

The annual parade recognizes men and women who serve or have served the nation through their military service.

Sponsored by the Village West Rotary Club, the parade will begin at 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, near Village West Parkway, ending at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.

Vintage cars and trucks, first responder units, best in show awards and new float contests are featured in the parade.

The parade marshals this year include Clausie Smith, former mayor of Bonner Springs; and Paige Wymore Wynn and Deryl Wynn, co-chairs of a capital campaign to build a new emergency shelter for kids in crisis in Wyandotte County.

Proceeds raised by the event will benefit Robert’s Place, a PACES emergency shelter for children in crisis. The shelter serves kids removed from their homes because of suspected abuse. It also provides respite for PACES consumers who are facing emotional or behavioral challenges and whose families need a temporary break to help avoid out-of-home placement of the kids. Kids stay at the shelter up to 72 hours.

PACES is the safety net mental health agencies serving children and adolescents with emotional and behavioral health needs, and their families.
