On Saturday night, May 9, an art show happened Kansas City, Kan., at the Alcott Arts Center, 180 S. 18th..
The event started with an art show by artists plus they had a silent auction and for a $10 donation you could hear “An Evening of Song” presented by Gary Barber with piano accompaniment by Debbie Goddard.
One of the key organizations that was behind this was the Wyandotte Arts Association, whose president is Jane Nichols.
The Wyandotte Arts Association was started 50 years ago and wants to keep the arts going in Wyandotte County, said association members. It supports many arts events. The oldest member of the association is Drew Gentry, 92, who had art on display at the show.
As many schools have cut back on teaching the arts, the Wyandotte Art Association remains to help people interested in art learn about it. In August, the Wyandotte Art Association has art on display at the West Wyandotte Branch Library.
“An Evening of Song,” was presented by Gary Barber, who sang a number of recognized tunes including “If I Were a Rich Man” from “Fiddler on the Roof,” and the “Sheik of Araby.”
Barber dedicated dthe second half of the performance to his daughter, Beka Kramer, and his granddaughter. The first song after the intermission was called “Nellia Fantasia.” An excerpt from the song is, “In my fantasy I see just the world will all live in peace and harmony.”
Barber sang the song to her, and Beka Kramer said she was going to cry. That she did, and tears of joy and happiness rolled down her cheeks.
At the end of the performance both Gary and Beka sang together in an amazing performance. Afterwards they received a standing ovation.
Art happened here in Kansas City, Kan., with the proceeds going to help support the Alcott Arts Center. It was a memorable experience for those who attended.
