Preliminary auditions Sunday, Wednesday for KC SuperStar show

High school students who like to sing will have an opportunity to audition for the KC SuperStar competition for the best high school singer in the metropolitan area.

Auditions are set for 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 29, and 4 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, at the Jewish Community Center, 5801 W. 115th St., Overland Park. Singers only need to attend one audition.

KC SuperStar is produced by the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City. Judges are area industrial professionals Krista Blackwood, Whitney Smith, Samantha Agron and Brad Cunningham.

Now in its sixth year, KC SuperStar is a competition that is like “American Idol” or “The Voice.”

It is open to any high school student in the metropolitan area.

KC SuperStar will award one $10,000 scholarship prize to the best high school singer in the Greater Kansas City area who is selected through auditions. Those auditioning should be prepared to sing one song of their choice, without accompaniment. Solo singers from all backgrounds, representing the full spectrum of musical genres, will compete for the prize in a final event on Sunday, Aug. 23.

The second-place winner will receive $5,000; third place, $2,500 and fourth place, $1,000 in scholarships.

Up to 25 performers will be chosen to compete in the KC SuperStar semifinals on Monday, June 1, in the White Theater at the JCC.

At the finals, on Aug. 23 a panel of professionals in the entertainment industry will judge the singers selecting the top four; the audience will vote to determine the ultimate winner.

The proceeds from the event underwrite more than $300,000 in scholarship and programs at the JCC. Based on financial need, these scholarships give children, families and individuals access to the JCC’s programs and activities, such as summer camps, the Child Development Center, special needs and the Heritage Center for older adults.
