Woman dies in apartment fire on North 2nd Street

A 69-year-old woman died in a fire overnight at a residential four-plex at 204 N. 2nd St., Kansas City, Kan.

The fire was at 1:06 a.m. Jan. 25.

A Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department spokesman said when crews arrived, within 4 minutes of the call, heavy fire was showing from the front of a two-story residential four-plex apartment. Crews attacked the fire, which had spread throughout the structure, the spokesman said.

Neighbors told fire crews that someone may have been in the building, according to the spokesman.

The woman was found in an upstairs bedroom, and fire crews quickly removed her from the structure, but she had succumbed to her injuries in the fire, the Fire Department spokesman said.

An adult male also had been in the structure and had received burns to his back and feet, the spokesman said. He was found outside a nearby building and was taken to the hospital, nonemergency, for additional treatment and evaluation.

Also, a firefighter received minor injuries during the firefighting and was taken nonemergency to the hospital, the Fire Department spokesman said.

The fire investigator came to the scene of the fire and is investigating it, according to the spokesman.

The Fire Department reported that the estimated fire damage to the structure and contents was $80,000. The pre-fire value of the building and contents was $200,000.
