Piper car show returns on Saturday
The Piper car show will return on Saturday, Sept. 24. The Piper Community Festival Car and Truck Show and Shine event will feature cars, trucks and motorcycles on display. It is held in conjunction with the Piper Community Festival on Saturday. Car show registration will be the same day, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at Piper High School, 4400 N. 107th, Kansas City, Kansas. There will be plenty of parking for trucks and trailers. There will be a $10 entry fee per vehicle entered in the show. More than 60 awards will be given out, and the awards will be presented at 3 p.m. Saturday. One of the vehicles will be named the principal’s choice pick, and will be featured on next year’s T-shirt and banner for the car show. The Piper Community Festival, the same day and place, will start with a pancake breakfast by the Boy Scouts from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday. A 5k run-walk will start at 8 a.m. Online registration ends Sept. 23 but same-day registration will be available for the 5k. Registration for the 5k will be $25 for 19 and over, $20 for 18 and younger. A silent auction will be held inside Piper school at the same time as the car show. Also, a carnival will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be family wristbands for $50 per family, or individual wristbands at $20 per person. Bingo is planned from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at the festival, with a value pack offered for $10. There will be no admission charge to walk through the festival, and food and refreshments will be available. Proceeds will benefit the Piper Educational Foundation.
KC Blind All-Stars 5K walk-run to benefit School for Blind
The Kansas State School for the Blind is partnering with Audio-Reader Network for the KC Blind All-Stars Foundation Annual Hybrid 5K Walk-Run Saturday, Sept. 24. Audio-Reader Network is a public service of the University of Kansas that will help relay the visual information of the event in real time for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. The KCBAS Foundation Hybrid 5K Walk-Run will take place at 9 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 24. KMBC meteorologist Nick Bender will be master of ceremonies, with warm-up conducted by fitness coach Monique McDaniel. KCK Mayor Tyrone Garner and KSSB Superintendent Jon Harding also plan to be in attendance. The program begins at 8:45 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Kansas State School for the Blind, 1100 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Registration is at https://runsignup.com/kcbas5k. Mercy and Truth event to offer free vaccines and free items Saturday
Mercy and Truth KCK Clinic, 721 N. 31st St., will hold a free event from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 24. The event will offer free COVID vaccines and free shingles vaccines. The event is free and open to the public. Also available for free will be new shoes, Bombas socks and protein shakes, while supplies last. There are 200 shingles vaccines available, 200 pairs of shoes and 200 protein shakes available. The shingles vaccines have an approximate value of $200 each. The event is sponsored by Mercy and Truth Medical Mission, Samaritan’s Feet, Shepherd’s Center of Kansas City, Kansas, the Church of the Resurrection and Increase the Reach.
Last day for Fairfax exhibit at Wyandotte County Museum
Saturday, Sept. 24, will be the last day of the Fairfax historical exhibit at the Wyandotte County Museum, 621 N. 126th St., Bonner Springs. The museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The exhibit includes items from companies that have been part of the Fairfax industrial district in Kansas City, Kansas. There is also a 10-minute video on the history of Fairfax. There is no charge for admission.
Applefest returns this weekend to Grinter Place
The annual Applefest will return Saturday and Sunday at Grinter Place state historic site, 1420 S. 78th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The event was last held around three years ago. This year the Grinter Place Friends are partnering with Strawberry Swing to hold the event. The group has popup events each weekend, bringing its own following, food trucks and more to events. The event Saturday and Sunday will include kids’ activities, free tours of the Grinter House by tour guides in period costume, artists and crafters’ displays, music and Grinter Place items for sale such as apple butter, candles and T-shirts. There will be vendors. Representatives of the Delaware and Wyandotte nations will give presentations on a small stage. A small pop-up gift shop will be located inside Grinter House. Admission is free and open to the public for the two days. Hours of the festival are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25. Grinter Place is a state museum on the site of a ferry across the Kansas River, on the military road between Ft. Leavenworth and Ft. Scott. Annual Slovenefest to be Saturday at Holy Family Church
Holy Family Catholic Church will celebrate its 14th annual Slovenefest 2022 on Saturday, Sept. 24. Slovenefest is about celebrating God, church, family and Slovenian heritage. Slovenefest 2022 will begin with a Mass at 4 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 274 Orchard, Kansas City, Kansas. The family festivities will be held from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Monsignor Mejak Hall, gym, and school grounds, at 513 Ohio, Kansas City, Kansas. There will be a Slovenian dinner, children and adult games, a silent auction, a cultural booth and a raffle. Entertainment includes the Brian McCarty Band and Hrvatski Obicaj. Holy Family Catholic Church is made up of families that have been attending Mass and school for generations. The church is over 100 years old and is home to many Slovenian families. All money raised benefits Holy Family Catholic Church.
Hispanic Heritage Festival planned
A Hispanic Heritage Festival is planned from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at Shawnee Park, 719 S. Pyle St., Kansas City, Kansas. The event is sponsored by Fiske Elementary with Armourdale Renewal Association. There will be a mechanical bull ride, inflatables, face painting and music. Food will be available for purchase.
Free movie screenings on The Legends Lawn
“Night at the Museum” will be the free movie screening at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, on The Legends Lawn. Visitors may bring a blanket or a lawn chair and watch the outdoor movie, playing on the big screen on the west side of the shopping center. The Legends Outlets shopping center is near I-70 and I-435 in Kansas City, Kansas.
