Johnson and Leavenworth counties in Kansas also are under the thunderstorm watch, along with Jackson, Platte and Ray counties in Missouri, plus several other counties.

The weather service also said a heat advisory is in effect for Wyandotte County from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday.

The heat index could reach as high as 107 on Sunday, the weather service said.

Individuals should drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check on relatives and neighbors, according to the weather service. Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles.

Those who work or spend time outdoors should take extra precautions, and reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency and individuals may call 911.
