Kansas City Monarchs’ All-Stars, Matt Hartman and Matt Adams, led the Monarchs to a dominant, 10-3 victory over the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Saturday.

Hartman and Adams led the way with their nine strikeouts and two home runs. Adams’ two home runs on the night brought his total to four in the past four games and added to his league leading total of 19 on the year.

In the first inning, Matt Hartman, the All-Star pitcher who received the start for the Monarchs, held the RailCats scoreless in the first frame. Hartman picked up two of his nine strikeouts on the night in the top of the first.

Nick Garcia, the All-Star pitcher for the RailCats, dealt a scoreless first inning and only faced three batters, recording two strikeouts. Darnell Sweeney reached first with a hard hit single but was caught stealing following a Casey Gillaspie strikeout.

Hartman continued his strong performance on the mound in the top of the second by retiring the side in one, two, three fashion. In the bottom of the second the fireworks started early at Legends Field.

Matt Adams kicked off the July 4th weekend celebrations with a deep blast over the left field wall to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead, his first of two home runs on the night.

Gaby Guerrero reached first base with a fielders’ choice following a David Thompson walk. With Guerrero on first, Chad De La Guerra roped a hard hit between the RailCats shortstop to put two runners on with only one out. Pete Kozma brought home Guerrero with an RBI double to right field. Alexis Olmeda stepped to the plate to provide the grand finale for the second inning with a crushed, three-run home run over the left field wall. The Monarchs led 5-0 heading into the third inning.

In the third inning, Hartman once again added to his strikeout total, striking out two of the four batters he faced and holding the Railcats hitless.

In the home half of the third, Garcia surrendered three more runs to the Monarchs. Jan Hernandez reached first to start the inning with a single, and after recording one out, Garcia walked the next two batters he faced to load the bases. Kozma, following a lineout from De La Guerra, poured on the runs with a bases clearing RBI double that snuck past the right fielder to the corner. Garcia escaped the inning by securing a pop out from Alexis Olmeda, leaving the Monarchs up 8-0 after three innings played.

Hartman and Garcia both recorded one strikeout in the fourth inning on their way to their one, two, three innings on the mound. In the fifth, Hartman continued his quick efforts on the mound, striking out two of three en route to another scoreless inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Monarchs added to their lead with the American Association home run leader and All-Star Matt Adams blasting another solo shot, this time over the right field wall. Garcia allowed one more run in the inning via a sacrifice fly from Pete Kozma, following two singles from Thompson and De La Guerra. The Monarchs pushed their lead to 10-0 heading into the top of the sixth behind Kozma’s fifth RBI of the night.

In Hartman’s final inning of work, the RailCats finally found their way across the plate. Following Daniel Lingua’s hit by pitch at-bat, Victor Nova hit a two-run home run to right field. Hartman picked up his eighth and ninth strikeouts on the night and brought the inning to a close with the Monarchs leading 10-2. Hartman finished the night with six innings pitched, three hits allowed, nine strikeouts, two walks and two earned runs.

In the bottom of the sixth, Garcia slowed the Monarchs’ offense and held them scoreless, retiring three of four and allowing no hits in his final inning of work. Garcia finished with six innings pitched, 10 hits allowed, five strikeouts, three walks and 10 earned runs.

In the seventh inning, the Monarchs made a plethora of defensive substitutions, replacing Pete Kozma with Kevin Santa, and Willie Abreu replacing David Thompson. Darnell Sweeney moved to third base while Abreu filled in in left field, and on the mound Brock Gilliam replaced Matt Hartman.

Gilliam allowed a one-out, solo home run to Chris Burgess before settling in and retiring the side. The Monarchs looked to add to their lead in the seventh following a one-out double from Gaby Guerrero. Kansas City was not able to capitalize with a runner in scoring position on the RailCats’ reliever, Ryan Campbell. Campbell forced a flyout and groundout to end the inning and hold the RailCats’ deficit at eight heading into the eighth.

In the top of the eighth, Brock Gilliam retired the RailCats in order, ending the inning with back-to-back strikeouts. In the bottom of the eighth, the RailCats’ Campbell held the Monarchs scoreless in spite of a leadoff walk from Darnell Sweeney.

Kansas City called upon Cam Hill, from the bullpen, to close the door on Gary SouthShore in the top of the ninth. Hill struck out two of the first three batters he faced and retired the side in one, two, three fashion to secure the series win.

The final game of the three game series against the Gary SouthShore RailCats is at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 3. The game can be heard on the Monarchs Broadcast Network with the pre-game beginning at 2:30 p.m. and the video stream airing on aabaseball.tv.

New York visits Sporting on Sunday

Sporting Kansas City (4-10-4, 16 points) will play host to the New York Red Bulls (8-5-5, 29 points) at 7 p.m. Sunday at Children’s Mercy Park as the club celebrates Fourth of July weekend with the team’s annual Americana theme night featuring a pre-match naturalization ceremony and post-match fireworks on the eve of Independence Day.

Tickets are available on SeatGeek as Sporting KC plays the 200th MLS match at Children’s Mercy Park on a night in which Peter Vermes will coach his 500th game for the club in all competitions.

The longest tenured head coach in Kansas City professional sports history, Vermes has served as Sporting’s manager for 14 straight seasons dating back to 2009. Vermes is Major League Soccer’s all-time leader in matches coached for one club and he has won the most MLS matches among all players and head coaches in league history.

A three-time finalist for MLS Coach of the Year, Vermes was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2013 and was named the first ever MLS Sporting Executive of the Year in 2018. Vermes has won three Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup titles, the most among current MLS coaches, and remains the only person to win MLS Cup as a player and a coach with the same club.

Vermes began his playing career in New York when Major League Soccer launched in 1996 and on Sunday will lead his squad against a Red Bulls side that currently sits atop the Eastern Conference table after a dramatic 2-1 come-from-behind win over Atlanta United FC on Thursday. Sixteen-year-old homegrown forward Serge Ngoma scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute – becoming the youngest player to score in MLS this season — to cap off a late rally for New York’s fifth straight home win.

The Red Bulls opened the season with seven consecutive road victories across all competitions and lead the league with five away wins in the regular season, however they have gone 0-3-1 away from home since with 2-0 defeats in each of their past three road trips and will be looking to snap a 294-minute road scoreless drought on Sunday.

The cross-conference clash will be a rematch of the 2017 U.S. Open Cup final and features two teams which have booked berths to play in the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup semifinals on July 27. Should both sides pull off road victories to advance to this year’s U.S. Open Cup final, Kansas City would be the host of the finale this September.

The Red Bulls, who have qualified for the playoffs each of the last 12 years, last won in Kansas City in 2014 and on Sunday will be making their first trip to Children’s Mercy Park since 2019.

Sporting is 4-1-1 against New York in the last six meetings across all competitions and won the most recent encounter, prevailing 2-1 in the 2021 season opener to give SKC a slight edge in the all-time regular season series (22-21-14) between the MLS charter clubs.

Sporting Kansas City will be aiming for the team’s first win of the year against an Eastern Conference opponent (0-3-2) in a match that will feature two elite Scottish wingers going head-to-head. Sporting KC captain Johnny Russell leads the team with seven goals in all competitions this year – and ranks third in MLS with 76 combined goals (45) and assists (31) in the regular season since the start of 2018 – while New York newcomer Lewis Morgan leads the Red Bulls with 10 goals in all competitions, scoring his eighth of the regular season on Thursday.

Sunday’s showdown will be locally televised on 38 The Spot with three hours of coverage beginning at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. The broadcast will also stream live on SportingKC.com and in the Sporting KC app for viewers in Kansas and Missouri (excluding the St. Louis area per MLS policy), as well as ESPN+ for out-of-market subscribers.

Local radio broadcasts will also air on Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Grande 1340 AM.
