The way Roger Marshall sees it, there are three main issues facing Americans today. They are inflation, inflation and inflation.

That was the message the junior U.S. senator from Great Bend delivered to members of the Congressional Forum who met Friday, July 15, at Davis Hall at Wyandotte County Lake. The forum is a committee of the Kansas City, Kansas, Area Chamber of Commerce.

Sen. Marshall, a Republican, said he fears that the economy will suffer a recession. He blamed the Biden administration for too much unnecessary spending.

High gas prices are a result of limited supply; he said that it takes two years for any new oil drilling effort to become operational. The senator has encouraged the use of biofuels.

Sen. Marshall is a medical doctor who has delivered more than 5,000 babies. Affordable health care has been one of his concerns.

The senator told of the need for immigration reform; he also said it is important to have a secure border.

Sen. Marshall spoke about the need for a qualified workforce and praised the efforts of Kansas City Kansas Community College and Donnelly College for helping meet those needs.

Sen. Marshall said he is opposed to eliminating the filibuster rule in the U.S. Senate that requires 60 votes before a bill can be passed. Democrats have criticized that rule.

Sporting falls 3-0 in Utah

Sporting Kansas City (5-12-5, 20 pts.) closed out a three-game road swing with a 3-0 loss against rivals Real Salt Lake (9-6-6, 33 pts.) at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah, on Sunday night.

After a scoreless first half, Sporting was reduced to 10 men in the second half following Roger Espinoza’s red card and RSL fired home three second-half goals to deal Sporting a loss on the road.

Sporting manager Peter Vermes made three changes from Wednesday’s draw in Minnesota, with defender Robert Voloder in for Andreu Fontas who was suspended through yellow card accumulation, while veterans Roger Espinoza and Johnny Russell replaced Felipe Hernandez and Cam Duke.

That meant second straight starts for 21-year-old homegrown goalkeeper John Pulskamp and U-22 initiative signing Marinos Tzionis – each of whom was impressive during Wednesday’s draw at Allianz Field.

The first action of the match saw young Pulskamp called into a pair of saves within seconds of each other in the 10th minute. First, he sprung off his line to deny Sergio Cordova who was in on goal before moments later diving to his left to palm away Jefferson Savarino’s strike from the edge of the area.

Four minutes later, Sporting showed its teeth as the team moved through the gears up the field with the ball eventually finding Kayden Pierre on the wing. Pierre’s cutback found Tzionis 12 yards from goal, but the recently turned 21-year-old scuffed his effort into the arms of Zac MacMath.

Pulskamp continued to show his quality in the 15th minute as he once again stood tall with Justin Meram through one-on-one, blocking the close-range effort with his body.

In the 26th minute, Pablo Ruiz whipped a free kick attempt on target that forced Pulskamp into another save, diving to his right to push the ball out for a corner. From the ensuing delivery, Pulskamp produced another stunning stop, denying Savarino’s volley through traffic.

In the 39th minute, it was Sporting’s turn to threaten as Russell cut inside of two RSL defenders before sending a fizzing effort wide of the post from 25 yards as the teams headed for the halftime interval with the game scoreless.

Real Salt Lake took the lead early in the second half when Cordova headed home his fourth goal of the season after being picked out by Andrew Brody’s cross from the left wing. Cordova should have added a second goal in the 56th minute when he was picked out by a tempting cross from Aaron Herrera, but he glanced his header inches wide of the post.

The pivotal moment in the match came in the 61st minute when Roger Espinoza went into a strong challenge with Jasper Loffelsend near midfield and referee Joe Dickerson showed Espinoza a straight red card, leaving Sporting to try to find a way back into the game down a man for the final 30 minutes.

Real Salt Lake took immediate advantage of its numerical superiority, with Pablo Ruiz stroking home from the edge of the area after being found by Savarino to double the host’s lead.

RSL added a third in the 71st minute when Justin Meram picked out Savarino’s run inside the area with a pinpoint cross, leaving the Venezuelan with a simple task to glance a header into the back of the net and make the final score 3-0.

Sunday’s contest closed out a three-game road swing over the last eight days and a stretch of five road games in the last six MLS matches.

Sporting will now prepare for a home-heavy portion of the schedule, with eight of the next 11 matches taking place at Children’s Mercy Park, starting with next Saturday’s clash with Supporters’ Shield leaders Los Angeles FC. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday with tickets available via SeatGeek.com.

The Kansas City Current weathered an early storm from Seattle’s OL Reign before taking control of their Sunday evening match at Children’s Mercy Park.

In the end, the shot that counted was a game-winning penalty kick from team captain Lo’eau LaBonta in the 18th minute.

Goalkeeper A.D. Franch was on top of her game as well, making four saves to preserve a shutout and Kansas City win.

The 1-0 home victory continued a three-game win streak and seven-game unbeaten streak that has seen the Current climb from the bottom of the NWSL standings to fifth place and playoff contention as the season hits its mid-point.

OL Reign was on the front foot from the get-go, winning two set pieces inside the opening five minutes. Tziarra King and Bethan Balcer both narrowly missed shots to open the action.

Against the run of play, Current midfielder Victoria Pickett earned a penalty kick when she was brought down by Reign defender Phoebe McClernon on a run into the 18-yard box. Lo’eau LaBonta took the kick and hit it high into the right corner to put the home team up 1-0.

OL Reign nearly earned the goal right back in the next few minutes, forcing a save, two blocks and a shot off the post in quick succession.

The hydration break at the 30th minute was a turning point for the home side. Down 9 shots to 1, the Current began to press the issue before halftime, getting three shots off in first half stoppage time.

The Current continued its dominant run after halftime, with Kristen Hamilton hitting two crosses to CeCe Kizer just after the break, though Kizer’s shots were off the mark both times.

Hamilton nearly doubled the lead with a great run in the 70th minute, but her low shot to the left corner was saved by OL Reign goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce.

As time ran down, the Reign pushed numbers high up the field but was unable to find an equalizing goal.

Kansas City defender Alex Loera, a force on both ends of the pitch in the match, was carried off the field with a lower leg injury in stoppage time. She will be evaluated by the team’s medical staff on Monday.

After the match, head coach Matt Potter praised his team’s growth this season.

“I think the journey that we’re on as a group is still to be continued,” said the coach, “but we definitely like where we’re going. So if we can continue to do the things that we like to do, keep our feet on the ground and keep working hard like we do every day, then hopefully there’s more nights like this in the future.”

The Current has the week off before returning to training in advance of the next home game on July 31 against the Orlando Pride.
