Memorial Day forecast: Mostly sunny and breezy

Today’s forecast from the National Weather Service will be mostly sunny and breezy for Memorial Day.

Winds today will gust up to 44 mph, according to the forecast.

Strong to severe storms are possible this evening and Tuesday across the region, the weather service said.

Wyandotte County is in a marginal risk area for tonight’s severe storms, and in an enhanced risk area for Tuesday’s severe storms, according to the weather service.

The main threats of the storms are large hail, damaging winds and an isolated tornado, according to the weather service.

Today, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 75, the weather service said. It will be breezy, with a south wind of 22 to 25 mph, gusting to 44 mph.

Tonight, there is a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a low of 70, according to the weather service. It will be breezy, with a south wind of 14 to 21 mph, gusting as high as 32 mph.

Tuesday, there is a 60 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 1 p.m., the weather service said. The high will be near 81. A southwest wind of 10 to 14 mph will gust up to 23 mph. Between a tenth and quarter-inch of rain is possible.

Tuesday night, there is a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a low of 59, according to the weather service. The low will be around 59. A west northwest wind of 6 mph will become light and variable, gusting as high as 18 mph. Between a quarter and half-inch of rain is possible.

Wednesday, there is a 60 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers are likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 1 p.m., the weather service said. The high will be near 71 with a north northeast wind of 6 to 8 mph. Between a tenth and quarter-inch of rain is possible.

Wednesday night, there is a 60 percent chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 1 a.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 a.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 56. Between a quarter and half-inch of rain is possible.

Thursday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 74, the weather service said.

Thursday night, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 53, according to the weather service.

Friday, it will be sunny, with a high near 78, the weather service said.

Friday night, it will be partly cloudy, with a low of 60, according to the weather service.

Saturday, there is a 40 percent chance of showers, with a high of 80, the weather service said.

Saturday night, there is a 60 percent chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm, with a low of 63, according to the weather service.

Sunday, there is a 40 percent chance of showers, with a high near 80, the weather service said.

Traveling Vietnam Wall currently at National World War I Museum and Memorial

The American Veterans Traveling Tribute’s Vietnam Wall is on the southeast lawn of the National World War I Museum and Memorial today, Monday, May 30.

An 80 percent scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., the wall measures almost 400 feet long. The traveling wall contains every name etched on the original memorial.

The American Veterans Traveling Tribute also will display the “Cost of Freedom Tribute,” smaller tribute panels honoring American soldiers in conflicts through the 20th and 21st centuries, including World War I, World War II, 911, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Memorial Day ceremony

A Memorial Day ceremony will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday, May 30, at the memorial courtyard.

The program will include remarks from dignitaries and a keynote address from Lt. Gen. Larry Jordan. The ceremony is free to the public.

Walk of Honor dedication

A Walk of Honor dedication and AVTT Vietnam Wall closing ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 30, in the Memorial courtyard.

New granite bricks will be dedicated during a special ceremony. This ceremony also is free to the public.

The museum and memorial will have discount admission for veterans for Memorial Day. Admission is free for veterans and active duty military personnel. General admission for the public is half-price on Memorial Day Weekend. The museum is at 2 Memorial Drive, Kansas City, Missouri.

Memorial Day commemoration planned at Emerson Park

A Memorial Day commemoration is planned at 11 a.m. Monday, May 30, at Emerson Park, Strong Avenue and South 29th Street, Kansas City, Kansas.

The event, sponsored by American Legion Post No. 213, will honor veterans and remember those who died while serving in the nation’s armed forces.

The event is open to the public. Those attending should bring lawn chairs.
