Two UG committees to meet tonight

Two Unified Government committees, the Public Works and Safety Committee, and the Administration and Human Services Committee, are scheduled to meet beginning at 5 p.m. tonight.

On the Public Works and Safety agenda is a responsible bidder amendment to an ordinance that would allow the UG to adopt a standard operating procedure requiring OSHA-10 certification and a drug and alcohol abuse prevention program for some construction contracts. It is intended to increase safety.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Fire Department is requesting to apply for an Economic Development Administration grant for a public safety training facility.

Also on the agenda is a request to create a grant-funded program coordinator position in the Police Department’s Victim Services Unit.

Also scheduled is an overview about the imporvements for the levee trail system, including a trail head park on each side of the Rock Island Bridge.

A public works quarterly report also is scheduled at the PWS Committee meeting.

The UG Administration and Human Services meeting will follow the PWS meeting.

The agenda includes a district court update by Judge William Burns.

Also scheduled is consideration of a resolution to amend the meeting time schedules for UG committees and the UG Commission.

Also scheduled is a request to reallocate returned or unused Emergency Services Grant funds to assist in establishing temporary shelters.

Under consideration will be a resolution to accept federal funds for homelessness assistance and supportive services, and enter into an agreement with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Also on the Administration and Human Services agenda is a request from Mt. Carmel Redevelopment Corp. to revise its budget. It manages the Willa Gill Center, providing services to address housing and food insecurity. The corporation receives a $260,000 grant from Community Development Block Grant and general funds each year. With increased costs, it is asking for an increase in the 2022 budget.

Wrong-way driver on I-70 ramp crashes SUV into car carrying three teens

A wrong-way driver on an I-70 ramp crashed into another vehicle, disabling both vehicles on Sunday night, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper’s report.

A 29-year-old Kansas City, Missouri, man driving a 2011 Jeep Patriot entered the ramp from Park Drive to eastbound I-70 from the wrong direction around 11:40 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, the trooper’s report stated.

A 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer with three teenage males from Kansas City, Kansas, was exiting eastbound I-70 to Park Drive in the correct direction and attempted to avoid the Jeep, but was struck in the driver’s door, the trooper’s report stated.

The accident took off the rear side tire of the Lancer, the report stated. Both vehicles had disabling damage, according to the trooper’s report.

Two of the teens in the Lancer had no injuries, but the third, a passenger, had a possible injury and was taken to a hospital in Kansas City, Kansas, the trooper’s report stated. The driver of the Lancer was a 17-year-old male from Kansas City, Kansas.

The wrong-way driver was not injured, the report stated.

Mild, cool fall weather today, storms possible Wednesday

Mild and cool fall weather has arrived in Wyandotte County, with the high near 60 today, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

A storm that moved through Sunday afternoon dropped the temperatures around 15 degrees to the cool 60s.

So far, the forecast does not call for any freezing temperatures, but temperatures will drop to 42 tonight before warming up a little midweek, according to the forecast. Friday night, they will be back to a low of around 40 degrees.

A slow moving storm system will bring thunderstorms Wednesday, with rain continuing into Thursday, the weather service said.

From 1 to 2 inches of rain is expected area-wide on Wednesday and Thursday; however, no flooding or severe weather is expected, according to the weather service.

Today, it will be cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 60, and a north wind of 5 to 8 mph, the weather service said.

Tonight, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 42 and an east northeast wind of 3 to 7 mph, according to the weather service.

Tuesday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 66 and a south east wind of 8 to 15 mph, gusting as high as 25 mph, the weather service said.

Tuesday night, there is a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 a.m., with a low of 56, according to the weather service. A south southeast wind of 11 to 14 mph will gust as high as 24 mph. Between a tenth and quarter-inch of rain is possible.

Wednesday, there is an 80 percent chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm, with a high near 61, the weather service said. A south southeast wind will be 6 to 10 mph, gusting as high as 18 mph. Between a half and three-quarters of an inch of rain is possible.

Wednesday night, there is a 60 percent chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 1 a.m., then a chance of showers, according to the weather service. The low will be around 47. Between a half and three-quarters of an inch of rain is possible.

Thursday, there is a 40 percent chance of showers, with a high near 57, the weather service said.

Thursday night, there is a 30 percent chance of showers before 1 a.m., with a low of 45, according to the weather service.

Friday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 57, the weather service said.

Friday night, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 40, according to the weather service.
