Master Gardeners to hold training in September

Wyandotte County Extension Master Gardener Training is open for registration until Sept. 1.

Any Wyandotte County resident with an interest in horticulture may apply for the Extension Master Gardener program. The program is for those who want to improve their skills and knowledge, and who like to work with people.

The training program will be held Sept. 21 to Nov. 2 at the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame, 630 N. 126th St., Bonner Springs. The class could potentially be on Zoom.

The cost of the training is $125, which includes all training materials and classes.

KCK man dies in traffic accident

A Kansas City, Kansas, man died in a traffic accident Thursday afternoon on I-435 south of Midland Drive in Johnson County.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol trooper’s report, a Mitsubishi was northbound on I-435 when its left rear tire blew out, around 3 p.m. Thursday.

The vehicle was unable to correct its direction and struck the right guardrail, according to the report. The vehicle then went over a bridge and rolled twice, landing in a creek, the trooper’s report stated.

The Mitsubishi was pulling a wood chipper trailer.

A passenger in the Mitsubishi, Gomez Humberto-Perez, 43, of Kansas City, Kansas, died in the accident, according to the trooper’s report.

The driver of the vehicle, a 24-year-old man from Overland Park, Kansas, was injured and was taken to a hospital, the report stated.

Severe storms possible tonight

Severe weather will be possible with storms expected to develop tonight, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

The main threats are for damaging winds, large hail and frequent lightning, the weather service said. Local flash flooding and an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out, according to the weather service. Three-quarters to an inch of rain is possible.

Today’s temperatures will reach a high of 89, with a heat index near 100, according to the forecast.

More scattered thunderstorms will be possible Saturday and Sunday, however, severe weather is not expected at this time, the weather service said.

Rain chances will return to the forecast Wednesday and Thursday, according to the weather service.

Today, it will be partly sunny, with a high near 89 and heat index values as high as 100, the weather service said. A south southeast wind will be 6 to 11 mph, gusting as high as 20 mph.

Tonight, there is a 70 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., according to the weather service. Some of the storms could be severe and produce heavy rain. The low will be around 72 with a south southeast wind of 5 to 10 mph becoming west after midnight. Winds may gust as high as 18 mph. Between three-quarters and one inch of rain is likely.
