Monarchs drop a pair to the Dogs

Playing their second doubleheader in a row the Kansas City Monarchs (22-17) dropped both games to the visiting Lincoln Saltdogs (20-19) Friday night at Legends Field in Kansas City, Kansas
.
Game 1
In game one of a double header, Kansas City lost 7-5 to Lincoln. Pitching struggles and a slow start on offense gave the Saltdogs the advantage in the first outing.

With right-handed pitcher Nick Travieso on the mound for the Monarchs, the Saltdogs got things started in the first inning with a solo home run from Forrestt Allday to gain an early 1-0 lead. They did not hold the lead for long as Jan Hernandez tied the game 1-1 with a solo home run of his own for his eleventh of the season.

In the third inning, with a runner in scoring position at third base for the Saltdogs, a wild pitch from Travieso that got past catcher Morgan McCullough brought the runner in to score as the Saltdogs took back the lead 2-1.

After a quiet few innings on the bats for both teams, the Saltdogs took control over the whole game. A two-run home run from Josh Altmann added to their lead, putting Lincoln up 4-1.

Travieso gave up four runs on five hits with three strikeouts in five and a third innings pitched.

Left-handed pitcher Elroy Urbina entered the game in the sixth inning, replacing Travieso. The pitching struggles continued as Urbina gave up a double to his first batter and immediately gave up an RBI single that helped the Saltdogs add to their lead, making it a 5-1 game.

The Saltdogs were not done, as an RBI double by Yanio Perez made it a 6-1 contest.

Urbina was pulled without recording an out, putting RHP Ramsey Romano on the mound next.

With runners at second and third with one out in the sixth, the Saltdogs continued to add runs on the board. A ground out drove in the runner from third, putting Lincoln up 7-1.

The Monarchs got some things going in the bottom of the seventh inning, trying to mount a comeback. With a Colin Willis single, a walk by Charcer Burks, and single from Will Kengor, the bases were loaded for Kansas City with one out. McCullough advanced to first on a fielder’s choice, driving in Willis to cut the game to 7-2.

Kevin Santa then singled to drive in another run for the Monarchs, making it 7-3. Ryan Grotjohn then walked and loaded the bases again with two outs, bringing Jan Hernandez to the plate.

Hernandez walked and the Monarchs brought in another run, making it a 7-4 game. Gabby Guerrero came up to bat with bases loaded once again. Guerrero took a walk as well, cutting it to 7-5 for the Saltdogs. Casey Gillaspie popped out to the third baseman in foul territory to end the game.

Game 2

The Lincoln Saltdogs (20-19) had the Monarchs’ number all season long. Kansas City (22-17) entered the nightcap of the doubleheader 1-5 against the visitors from Nebraska and were looking to change that.

The Saltdogs continued their strong offensive efforts in the early going of game two. They were able to notch two runs off Monarchs starter, Justin Shafer.

A pair of singles and a sacrifice fly put the Dogs on top.

It wasn’t until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Monarchs earned their first run from a ground ball hit by Charcer Burks. The hit drove in Jan Hernandez who reached base, walking to lead off the inning.

Right-handed pitcher Ryan Newell got his first ever appearance in the Kansas City pinstripes. Newell reached his way to the Monarchs active roster on June 26. He came into the game in relief for Jacob Lindgren in the fifth inning. The reliever worked his way out of a jam and finished his first inning cleanly. Newell did not allow a run, nor a hit, but walked one, and struck-out one as well.

The Monarchs struggled all night offensively, only recording four hits in game two. Lincoln’s pitching staff was nearly dominant. Their rotation of Minier, Hope, Lombana and Pugliese held the hometown team to just a single run.

Carlos Diaz finished the game for the Monarchs on the mound. He made quick work, striking out the first two batters, walking the third, then striking out the fourth to end the top of the seventh inning.

In their last chance at the plate, the Monarchs went down swinging. Burks and Willis both went down on strikes to begin the inning. Catcher Alexis Olmeda kept the game alive with a two-out single right up the middle. The torch was then passed to Kevin Santa who grounded out in a fielder’s choice to end the game. The Saltdogs took game two, 2-1.

The Kansas City Monarchs will face the Lincoln Saltdogs in the third game of the series on Saturday night. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. with the gates opening at 5 p.m. There will be a full fireworks display after the conclusion of the game. The game can be heard on the Monarchs Broadcast Network with the pre-game beginning at 6:35 p.m. and the video stream airing on aabaseball.tv.

KC NWSL plays NJ-NY tonight in New Jersey

Following an action-packed stretch of three matches in six days, Kansas City NWSL returns to the pitch on Friday night.

Head coach Huw Williams’ squad is leaving the friendly confines of Legends Field for a road tilt against NJ/NY Gotham FC at 6 p.m. Friday’s match marks the first meeting between the two sides, and the first broadcast locally on KSMO-TV.

Gotham FC (3-1-2) enters Friday on a three-match unbeaten streak, the most recent of which was a dominant 3-0 victory over OL Reign on June 26.

Currently, Gotham sits in fifth place in the NWSL table, marking the fourth consecutive match Kansas City NWSL has played against a team in the top half of the league standings.

Kansas City (0-6-2), meanwhile, enters Friday on the heels of a heartbreaking 2-1 home loss to the Washington Spirit on June 26. The visitors stole three points off a goal by Spirit rookie forward Trinity Rodman in the final minutes of the match.

Kansas City looking to continue recent trend of fast starts

After suffering a scoring drought through several games, Kansas City NWSL has jumped out to quick starts in each of the team’s last two matches against the Orlando Pride and Washington Spirit.

Capping an impressive first-half performance last Wednesday against Orlando, Kansas City forward Mariana Larroquette punched in a corner kick to give the hosts a 1-0 lead eight minutes into first-half stoppage time. Unfortunately, Orlando equalized late in the first half with a goal from forward Sydney Leroux. The Pride went on to score two more goals in the second half, securing a 3-1 victory.

A similar narrative unfolded last Saturday against Washington, as Kansas City once again struck first.

A goal from forward Amy Rodriguez not only marked the fastest goal in Kansas City NWSL’s young history, but also gave KC a 1-0 lead. Kansas City then held Washington scoreless for over 70 minutes, but the Spirit scored twice in the closing minutes.

Despite the results, Kansas City can take solace in the fact that it has started both games extremely well. Getting out to another hot start on Friday will be crucial against a Gotham FC team that doesn’t make many mistakes defensively.

Gotham FC boasts NWSL’s best defense

Kansas City has already gone toe-to-toe with some of the NWSL’s best offenses this season in previous matchups with the Portland Thorns and Orlando Pride, but Friday’s match presents a different challenge. Gotham has played a league-low six matches but has conceded just two goals in the regular season, the lowest total in the NWSL.

Gotham FC has recorded four clean sheets and only conceded goals to Portland and Orlando. The team lost 1-0 to the Thorns but was able to scrape a 1-1 draw with Orlando.

Gotham boasts a variety of solid defenders, anchored by Mandy Freeman and Caprice Dydasco, both of whom have started each of Gotham’s six matches in the regular season.

Gotham’s usual first-choice goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan is away with the Canadian National Team in preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament. Sheridan has played in five matches for Gotham FC and kept three clean sheets and is also second in the NWSL with 27 saves. Goalkeeper Didi Haracic started the one game Sheridan missed, keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over OL Reign on June 6.

Players to watch

Kansas City NWSL: Defender – Forward Mallory Weber — Weber has been Kansas City’s jack of all trades this season, appearing in all three phases of Williams’ starting lineups over the course of the 2021 Challenge Cup and regular season. Weber made her first appearance on Kansas City’s backline last Saturday against Washington and excelled, starting, and playing, 90 minutes against one of the NWSL’s top teams. Weber made an impact both making tackles defensively and going forward offensively against Washington and should make an impact against Gotham no matter where she lines up. Weber has appeared in seven matches for Kansas City in the regular season with four starts.

NJ-NY Gotham FC: Forward Midge Purce — The 25-year-old winger is a crucial piece of Gotham’s attack and enters Friday’s match following a brilliant performance last Saturday against OL Reign. In the first half, Purce played an inch-perfect through ball ahead of forward Ifeoma Onumonu, who dribbled around the Reign’s goalkeeper to give Gotham FC a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute. Purce then extended Gotham FC’s lead in the second half, using her pace to blow past the Reign’s defense and slot a through ball into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead in the 60th minute. In total, Purce has two goals and one assist in five matches this year and should enter Friday’s showdown with Kansas City brimming with confidence.

Friday’s match is the first of eight games this season to be broadcast locally on KCTV and KSMO. Brad Porter and Aly Trost will deliver the action to fans throughout the KC metro area. In addition, the local broadcast will be simulcast on Sport Radio 810-WHB. Nationally, Friday’s match will be streamed live on Paramount+.
