UG schedules special meeting Thursday night on taxes

The Unified Government Commission will hold a special meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday, July 15, at City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas.

On the agenda is scheduling a public hearing for Sept. 7 on the commission’s intent to levy a property tax exceeding the revenue neutral rate.

According to agenda documents, the revenue neutral rate for the city of Kansas City, Kansas, was calculated at 37.1783 mills, and the revenue neutral rate for Wyandotte County was calculated at 37.8448 mills.

The budget being proposed by the UG Commission will require the levy of a property tax rate exceeding the revenue neutral rate, according to a proposed resolution.

The proposed resolution did not include any specific proposed rate, however, as one has not yet been approved.

A state law currently requires local governments to hold a hearing and listen to public comments if a proposed mill levy exceeds the revenue neutral rate. The proposed public hearing would be at 5 p.m. Sept. 7 at City Hall.

A public hearing is not scheduled tonight.

A UG budget workshop will follow the 5 p.m. special meeting. The budget workshop will be in the fifth floor meeting room at City Hall.

After the budget workshop, an executive, closed session is scheduled on litigation and labor.

According to agenda documents, the public can watch from the City Hall lobby.

The meeting also will be on UGTV cable television and on YouTube.
