Brilliant pitching by Shafer lifts Monarchs to victory

Willis’ clutch hit drives in two runs

The Kansas City Monarchs (33-18) won game one of their three-game series against Kane County (26-28) 3-1, on Friday.

Right-hander Justin Shafer dominated in his five innings by only giving up one hit.

The Monarchs offense struggled early by only recording two hits in the first six innings, but Colin Willis came up huge with a clutch double, driving in two runs in the seventh.

Shafer got things going early by striking out back-to-back batters in the first inning. In the second inning he gave up a single to Josh Rolette of the Cougars. An error on a wild throw by shortstop Morgan McCullough advanced Rolette all the way to third base. Kane County capitalized and drove in a run, putting them up 1-0.

Shafer went on to strike out two more batters and continued to dominate the game. He finished his performance going five innings, giving up one hit, one run, and three walks while striking out four.

Through six innings, the Monarchs recorded only two hits. McCullough doubled in the third inning bringing his hitting streak up to nine games. Gabby Guerrero also singled in the fourth.

Right-hander Ryan Newell (1-0) entered the game in the sixth inning for the Monarchs. He started off hot with back-to-back strikeouts.

Kane County starter Josh Tols gave the Monarchs trouble all game. He struck out six batters in a row through the fifth and sixth innings.

The Monarchs finally got things going on offense in the seventh inning. Guerrero started the inning with a single, followed by a walk from Charcer Burks.

With runners at first and second, Colin Willis came up to the plate and drove in both runners to give the Monarchs the lead, 2-1.

Newell went two and a third innings, giving up one hit and struck out three batters.

Jan Hernandez launched a solo home run in the eighth inning to add to the Monarchs’ lead, making it a 3-1 game.

Left-hander Carlos Diaz entered the game in the ninth inning, earning the save. It was his 11th save of the season, for 33 total, tying the franchise record. The Monarchs won 3-1 and have now won six in a row.

Kansas City will take on Kane County in game two of the home series on Saturday night at Legends Field. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. with the gates opening at 5 p.m.  The game can be heard on the Monarchs Broadcast Network with the pre-game beginning at 6:35 p.m. and the video stream airing on aabaseball.tv.

At the fair

The Wyandotte County Fair will continue from 2 p.m. to midnight Saturday, July 17, at the fairgrounds, 13700 Polfer Road, Kansas City, Kansas. The fair was well attended Friday night. The Wyandotte County Fair continues from 2 p.m. to midnight Saturday, July 17, at the fairgrounds, 13700 Polfer Road, Kansas City, Kansas.

Featured on Saturday night will be the Wyandotte County Fair Rodeo, as well as entertainment by several bands and a hot rod and antique car show.

It will be the last day for the fair.

The rodeo will begin at 7 p.m. and will include bronco riding, calf roping, steer wrestling and bull riding.

The hot rod and antique car show will begin at 5 p.m. in the Show arena.

The pie contest entries will be accepted from 10 a.m. to noon in the Red Barn, with judging at noon.

The carnival will open at 6 p.m. and continue through midnight Saturday, with wristbands $30.

Performing on the Main Stage Saturday will be Rusty Laffoon, 2-3:30 p.m.; State Line Drive, 4-5:30 p.m.; Silver Bullets, 6-7:30 p.m.; Sons of Sterline, 8-9:30 p.m.; and Hudson Drive, 10-11:30.

Performing in the Shade Pavilion are the Imagine Magic Show, 3 and 5 p.m. p.m.; Jim “Mr. Stinky Feet” Cosgrove, 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.; and State Line Drive, 8:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.

Saturday events

Wyandotte County Fair continues

Saturday, July 17, will be the last day of the Wyandotte County Fair. The fair will be open from 2 p.m. to midnight Saturday, with carnival rides from 6 p.m. to midnight. Admission is $5 per person, with ages 12 and younger free. Parking is $5. Events at the fair today include the Wyandotte County Fair Rodeo at 7 p.m.; a hot rod and antique car show at 5 p.m. in the Show arena; a pie contest from 10 a.m. to noon in the Red Barn; live music entertainment at the Main Stage and Shade Pavilion; magic show; and Mr. Stinky Feet.

Silent auction and viewing planned today

A silent auction and viewing is planned from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 17, at the Urban Station, 101 N. 14th St., Kansas City, Kansas. Artist Rita Blitt has donated four paintings to support Urbanworks projects.

Democrats to meet Saturday

Democratic candidates on the Aug. 3 primary ballot are invited to speak at the Wyandotte County Democratic Breakfast at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 17, at Jalisco’s restaurant, 5000 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The doors will open at 8 a.m., with the meeting beginning at 9 a.m. Primary candidates who speak must be registered Democratic voters. Admission is free, and the meeting is open to Democrats. Doughnuts, coffee, milk and juice are being provided. Mayor and sheriff candidates will be given five minutes each to speak. Commission candidates will have four minutes, and other candidates, three minutes.

Farmers Market open


The KCK Farmers Market is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Merc Co-Op parking lot, 501 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas.

‘Christmas in July’ at Wyandotte County Lake


The “Christmas in July” celebration is scheduled at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 17, at Wyandotte County Lake, 91st and Leavenworth Road, at the lake marina. A fishing derby from 5-6 p.m. will be followed by pontoon boat judging at 6 p.m. and a boat parade at 8:30 p.m. with fireworks to follow. Music is planned.

Monarchs play at home tonight


The Kansas City Monarchs, on a six-game winning streak, will play Kane County in the second game of a home series at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 17, at Legends Field. The gates will open at 5 p.m. Ticket information is at monarchsbaseball.com.
