Oskaloosa man found guilty of securities fraud

David W. Moeller, of Oskaloosa, Kansas, has been found guilty of one felony count of securities fraud, according to the Kansas Insurance Department.

Moeller was charged with one count of securities fraud for allegedly defrauding a Perry, Kansas, woman who invested funds with Moeller for the development of an invention known as the “blade caddy.”

State prosecutors alleged that, instead of using the investment dollars to develop the blade caddy product, Moeller used the funds to reimburse a Kansas City, Kansas, company to which he had written a bad check.

“Securities fraud is deterred when those willing to commit fraudulent behavior are publicly brought to justice,” Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt said in a news release. “The department will continue to be an advocate for Kansans by aggressively pursuing securities fraud in Kansas.”

On July 19, a trial was held before the Judge Christopher T. Etzel, of Jefferson County. On July 21, Judge Etzel issued a written verdict, finding Moeller guilty as charged.

Judge Etzel scheduled Moeller to be sentenced on Aug. 26. The investigation was conducted by the Office of the Kansas Securities Commissioner, a division of the Kansas Insurance Department. The criminal prosecution was conducted by the Kansas Attorney General’s Office.

Sporting KC defeats first-place Seattle, 3-1

Second-place Sporting Kansas City (9-3-3, 30 points) earned a win on Sunday night by sinking first-place Seattle Sounders FC (9-2-5, 32 points) 3-1 at Lumen Field.

Seattle carried a 17-game home unbeaten run into the match between the Western Conference’s top teams, but outstanding goals from captain Johnny Russell, winger Daniel Salloi and 20-year-old Cam Duke — plus three superb saves from Tim Melia — sealed the victory.

Sporting collected its third straight win in the series and improved to 7-2-3 in its last dozen regular season meetings with Seattle.

Sunday’s signature win lifts Sporting level with the Sounders at the top of the West on points per game and three points behind the New England Revolution in the Supporters’ Shield race.

Unbeaten in four straight games and wielding a 7-1-2 record in their last 10, Sporting will look to continue its winning ways Saturday when they play FC Dallas (3-7-5, 14 points) at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas. The 7:30 p.m. encounter will be shown live on Bally Sports Kansas City Plus and Bally Sports Midwest Plus and tickets are available at SeatGeek.com,

Coming off a 1-1 home draw against the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday, Sporting Kansas City fielded a lineup that included one change each in the midfield and attack.

Academy products Cam Duke and Wilson Harris dropped to the bench as veterans Roger Espinoza and Khiry Shelton — who now boast a 12-0-3 regular season record when starting together — slotted into the XI. For the second straight game, assistant coach Kerry Zavagnin led Sporting from the sidelines with manager Peter Vermes absent due to health and safety protocols.

After a cagey start to proceedings, Gadi Kinda conjured the first notable chance of the night in the 23rd minute with a delectable service into the box from the left flank. The on-running Espinoza was lurking to steer it home but his lunging attempt under duress fizzed marginally wide of the target.

At the opposite end, Melia produced a phenomenal save two minutes later by diving left to cast aside a Montero bicycle kick.

Russell broke the game open on the half-hour mark. The Scottish winger won a set piece 25 yards from goal by barreling into the central channel and drawing a foul on Danny Leyva.

His ensuing left-footed free kick bent around the Seattle wall, kissed off the far left post and nestled into the back of the net, bringing silence to the stunned Lumen Field crowd. Russell has now scored in two straight road matches and his three free kick strikes since 2019 are tied for the second most in MLS.

Seattle had conceded two first-half goals all season prior to Sunday but suffered the brunt of another Sporting haymaker in the 42nd minute.

Kinda kickstarted a ruthless counterattack by dispossessing Kelyn Rowe at midfield and spreading the ball wide left to Shelton, who galloped forward and returned a pass to his Israeli teammate. Kinda’s deft touch to the right found Salloi in stride and the 25-year-old made no mistake by hammering a shot past Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland for the ninth goal of his brilliant 2021 campaign. Salloi now has six goals and an assist in his last seven matches, and Academy products scored or assisted in each of the last 10 games.

Sporting was the superior side for the first 45 minutes but began the second half ominously when Seattle quickly pulled a goal back. Melia punched Rowe’s in-swinging cross only as far as Reed Baker-Whiting near the penalty spot and the ball fell to Montero, whose side-footed finish cut the Sounders’ deficit in half.

Seattle nearly equalized in the 55th minute on a 20-yard chip shot from MLS Golden Boot leader Raul Ruidiaz, but Melia conjured a save by leaping at full extension, getting a fingertip to the ball and redirecting it onto the goalpost.

The visitors restored their two-goal cushion behind Duke’s strike in the 72nd minute. Just two minutes after entering the match, the Sporting KC Academy graduate raced onto a delivery from Graham Zusi and slotted a first-time strike beyond the outstretched Cleveland and into the low left corner.

Duke’s first career MLS goal came on the heels of a standout performance on Wednesday against San Jose, while Zusi collected his 67th regular season assist for the club — second-most in team history — and Russell jumped to eighth on Kansas City’s all-time regular season chart with his 27th career assist.

Shellshocked from Duke’s goal, Seattle seldom threatened in the dying embers of the contest, although Melia racked up another save in second-half stoppage time by thwarting a frustrated Ruidiaz at close range. Sporting’s goalkeeper is now 7-2-2 in 11 regular season appearances against Seattle, including three victories at Lumen Field.

Monarchs win on the road, 8-3

After dropping the first two games of the road series to the Winnipeg Goldeyes (30-31), the Kansas City Monarchs (37-22) were in need of a victory to help stay atop of the South division standings.

The Monarchs got the win Sunday, 8-3, in Jackson, Tennessee.

The Winnipeg Goldeyes chose 26-year-old, Greg Harris, as their starter for the day.

6’3” right-handed pitcher from Valley Head, Alabama, was acquired by the Goldeyes through trade with the Chicago Dogs earlier this season. Harris went 0-2 while on staff with the Dogs and came into the day 1-1 with Winnipeg.

Kansas City, which scored first in the previous game, did so again with three first-inning runs. Morgan McCullough and Ryan Grotjohn both took the base on balls to start the game, followed by a Darnell Sweeney home run to take the early lead 3-0.

Despite the 37-pitch first inning by Harris, the Winnipeg Goldeyes did not flinch at all and responded in the bottom half of the inning with one run off of a Max Murphy double (3-1).

The Monarchs were led on the hill by right-hander Jameson McGrane. The hurler put the team in great position to win the ballgame with his eighth start of the season. After working out of a jam in the first inning, McGrane went on to retire six of the next seven batters.

The fourth inning served to be the best one for the Goldeyes as they were able to manufacture two runs off two walks, a single, and a double play groundout. McGrane got through the fifth before passing the ball to Elroy Urbina.

Kansas City ultimately put the nail in the coffin during the sixth inning. A trio of doubles from Colin Willis, Charcer Burks, and Will Kegor helped the Monarchs add some much needed cushion. It didn’t stop there either. Catcher Alexis Olmeda added an RBI single to left to top off the five-run inning (8-3).

McGrane’s outing of six innings, ten hits, three walks, and one strikeout served to be enough for the Sunday road victory, improving his 2021 season record to 4-1. Despite giving up double digit hits, he stayed aggressive with his pitches and let his defense work.

Elroy Urbina came up huge for Kansas City. The three innings of relief were his longest so far this season. The left-hander controlled all momentum down the final stretch of the game. Urbina only allowed five batters to reach base in the final three innings. The Goldeyes collected three hits off the reliever, but no runs.

The series finale win kept the Monarchs’ division lead at two and a half games over the Cleburne Railroaders.

The Monarchs will return home Monday for a four-game series with the Houston Apollos. Game one of five will get underway at 7 p.m. Monday night with the gates opening at 6 p.m. The game can be heard on the Monarchs Broadcast Network with the pre-game beginning at 6:35 p.m. and the video stream airing on aabaseball.tv

Tickets to Monarchs games can be purchased by calling 913-328-5618 or by visiting monarchsbaseball.com.
