Flags at half-staff today to honor late Kansas sergeant

Flags have been lowered to half-staff today in Kansas to honor Staff Sgt. Wesley W. “Wes” Kubie of Salina, Kansas.

Sgt. Kubie was involved in a military vehicle accident June 8 at Smoky Hill Air National Guard Range, 10 miles southwest of Salina.

Staff Sgt. Kubie was a Joint Terminal Attack Controller instructor for the Kansas Air National Guard, assigned to the 284th Air Support Operations Squadron at Smoky Hill. He was deployed to Afghanistan from 2019 to 2020 as an active guard reservist in the Air Force.


“Staff Sergeant Kubie lost his life in the line of duty serving his state and nation,” Gov. Laura Kelly said. “I share my condolences with the Kubie family, loved ones, and fellow Kansas Guardsmen. His commitment to our state will not be forgotten.”

Spectator suffers broken leg and neck at sideshow in KCK

A car doing doughnuts on Sunday night in front of a crowd at 1st and Osage in Kansas City, Kansas, ran into a spectator, injuring him, according to a social media post by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

A 24-year-old man suffered a broken leg and neck in the incident, police stated.

The sideshow took place in front of a large crowd in the Armourdale area about 9:45 p.m. Sunday, according to police.

Police are seeking any information about the incident to assist detectives in identifying the driver of a Ford Mustang, late 1990s model, that was doing doughnuts when it ran into the bystander.

Police are asking the driver of the Mustang to come forward and contact them by calling 913-596-3000. They are also asking witnesses to come forward.

Events such as sideshows have come to the community’s attention previously in Kansas City, Missouri, where police have tried to put a stop to them.

Salvation Army open today as relief shelter from heat

The Salvation Army Harbor Light Village, 6723 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas, will be open as a shelter for people to come in out of the hot weather today.

They will provide water and a snack for anyone who comes in.

Hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 17. People may stay until the closing hours.

The Harbor Light Village will not be open on Friday, June 18, in observance of the Juneteenth holiday.

A heat advisory is in effect this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures today are forecast to rise to around 99 degrees, with a heat index of 104. Temperatures are forecast to be around 100 on Friday.
