KCK Farmers Market scheduled to open Sunday

Note: Check with the KCK Farmers Market Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/kckfarmersmarket to see if it will be open in the event of a storm.

The KCK Farmers Market opens Sunday, May 16, in the Rosedale area of Kansas City, Kansas.

The market’s hours will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sundays at 4020 Rainbow Blvd.

This year, the KCK Farmers Market will be open at two locations, according to Stephanie Moore, board chair of the group.

The downtown Farmers Market location will open Wednesday, May 19, in downtown Kansas City, Kansas, in the parking lot of the Merc Co-op at 5th and Minnesota Avenue. Then, the downtown Farmers Market location at 5th and Minnesota also will be open on Saturday, May 22.

Hours on Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Merc Co-op parking lot will be 8 a.m. to noon. The Merc location is new this year, Moore said.

She said the farmers market is having a soft opening for two weeks until crops get a little more mature, and the market may grow as the year proceeds.

“Pretty much all the farmers are from within the metro,” Moore said.

There are some from Wyandotte County, and also surrounding areas such as Miami County, she added. There are also some New Roots for Refugee farmers from Catholic Charities.

All the fruits and vegetables come from within a four-state area, with many closer to the metropolitan area, she said.

Last year they saw vendors selling fruits and vegetables that were in season, mushrooms, jams, jellies and other items. She’s heard a vendor this year will offer hand-made brooms, and also has a hot-dog stand.

Moore said the farmers market is much different from a chain grocery store. The chain grocery typically will get its food from across the nation, with some fruits and vegetables from California or other places.

The farmers market, as well as the Merc Co-Op, focuses on local farmers.

“It’s much fresher, it’s harvested when it’s supposed to be, and not ripening on the truck,” Moore said.

When asked about prices, Moore said she wants to say they’re comparable, but local often costs a little more than chain grocery store prices. That’s because the chain stores buy in bulk, she said, and often the farmer isn’t handpicking the fruits and vegetables. Overhead is a little different, as there is typically a small increase in price to pay for the local produce and to support local farmers, she said.

Moore said the KCK Farmers Market has operated almost 20 years. Originally the KCK Green Market, an organic initiative through EPA support, it changed to a farmers market as they discovered it was hard to meet all the requirements through the entire food chain.

The Rosedale market started in 2009, she said. The KCK and Rosedale farmers markets merged in 2020.

The downtown farmers market formerly was at 6th and Tauromee and has moved three blocks this year to the parking lot of the Merc Co-op. The Merc opened at 5th and Minnesota last July.

The farmers markets accept debit and credit cards, Snap and cash. EBT-SNAP users’ funds will last twice as long with “Double Up Bucks.” Senior vouchers also will be accepted.

Moore says she enjoys going to farmers markets.

“I love seeing the farmer, and I love to ask him about the product and why they grow it, and how to cook it, how to prepare it and what’s a good recipe for it,” she said.

With the participants from New Roots for Refugees, Moore said she has seen some vegetables at the farmers markets that she had not seen before. “Our New Roots for Refugees farmers like to grow what they know,” she added.

The KCK Farmers Market hours:

Rosedale, open Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until sellout, 4020 Rainbow Blvd.

Downtown KCK , open Wednesdays starting May 19 from 8 a.m. to noon or until sellout, at the Merc Co-Op parking lot, 501 Minnesota Ave.

Downtown KCK, also open Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon or until sellout, at the Merc Co-op parking lot, 501 Minnesota Ave.

Sunday’s farmers market in Rosedale will be rain or shine and will stay open unless there is lightning, Moore said. People may check the KCK Farmers Market Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/kckfarmersmarket to see if there are any changes because of the weather.

KC NWSL plays to scoreless tie in season opener

Opening the season at Racing Louisville, Kansas City NWSL played to a scoreless tie on Saturday evening.

The two new franchises were looking for their first wins at Lynn Family Stadium in Louisville, but neither team could score. Both teams had chances to score, but neither could convert.

Kansas City had a chance in the second minute, as Amy Rodriguez fired a shot in the box off a through pass from Victoria Pickett.

Darian Jenkins of Kansas City also placed a free kick on Louisville’s Michelle Bentos in her regular season debut.

Racing Louisville took some shots near the end of the first half, but Nicole Barnhart of Kansas City came up with two saves and stayed aggressive in the final third.

In the second half, Kansas City controlled possession. Even though Racing Louisville pressured the backline the entire second half, it was unable to score against Barnhart.

“Victoria Pickett continues to play at a high level in the midfield and makes dangerous runs into the attack. The final part is to get her to get more shots off,” KC coach Huw Williams said.

Coach Williams said he was “excited” with the shutout as the team’s goal going into the match was to keep a clean sheet. He hopes to build on this shutout next week and “to also sneak a few goals in the next game at Houston.”

Kansas City now turns its focus to the next regular season match on May 23 in Houston against the Houston Dash. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on Paramount+.

Kansas City and Louisville each earned one point in the standings.

Sporting returns home Sunday to play Vancouver

Playing its third match in eight days, Sporting Kansas City (2-2-1, 7 points) will return to Children’s Mercy Park on Sunday to meet the Vancouver Whitecaps FC (2-2-1, 7 points) in a Soccer For All celebration.

Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. and a limited number of tickets for the contest are available at SeatGeek.com while supplies last.

Sunday’s encounter will be shown live on Bally Sports Kansas City Plus and Bally Sports Midwest Plus with three hours of live coverage beginning at 12:30 p.m. The game will also stream live on BallySports.com and the new Bally Sports app, while listeners can follow the action on Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Grande 1340 AM.

Sporting will join a league-wide effort on Sunday to foster more inclusive and equitable communities by celebrating Soccer For All, signifying that everyone is welcome to the club regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, disability, sexual orientation or economic status. The initiative is linked to “A Force for Good ,” a community campaign launched by Sporting in which The Victory Project joins community partners to meet crucial needs across the region and make the sport of soccer accessible to everyone.

At the forefront of Soccer For All, Sporting will launch its new Pride top at all SportingStyle locations inside the stadium. The Victory Project will also welcome four local partners to the match in Variety KC, Special Olympics, Boys & Girls Club of Greater Kansas City and The Whole Person.

Sporting and Vancouver enter Sunday with 2-2-1 records and have opened the 2021 campaign in identical fashion. Just as Sporting won, tied, lost, won and lost in its first five matches, so too did the Whitecaps.

Led by manager Peter Vermes, Sporting enjoyed the better of play against Houston Dynamo FC on Wednesday only to fall short in a 1-0 loss. The visitors outshot Houston 16-5 on the night, including a 14-2 advantage in the second half, but the Dynamo emerged victorious behind a 56th-minute goal from Maxi Urruti.

On the opposite touchline, third-year head coach Marc Dos Santos has guided Vancouver to impressive shutout home wins over the Portland Timbers and CF Montreal despite the fact that the Whitecaps have been forced to operate out of Salt Lake City due to COVID-related travel restrictions in Canada. Like Sporting, Vancouver took a 1-0 road loss Wednesday in a tightly contested game against Minnesota United FC.

Sporting has collected four wins and a draw in its last five regular season matches at Children’s Mercy Park dating back to 2020 and boast a 17-game regular season home scoring streak since August 2019, tied for the second-longest run in club history.

The most recent home fixture treated supporters to a thriller last Sunday as Sporting overturned a late deficit against Austin FC with goals from Kinda and Ilie Sanchez to prevail 2-1. It marked just the seventh time ever that Sporting had won a regular season match after trailing past the 80th minute.

The Whitecaps have missed the playoffs in three straight seasons, but early returns in 2021 suggest the Canadian outfit is capable of bouncing back into the upper half of the Western Conference. Vancouver is one of just five MLS teams to average less than a goal conceded per game, boasting a 0.8 goal against average through five matches. On the attacking side, Cristian Dajome has a team-best three goals and center forward Lucas Cavallini leads MLS in both duels won and fouls suffered.

Sporting has held an upper hand in the regular season series with Vancouver, posting a 10-3-4 record in 17 meetings.

Since falling to the Whitecaps on Sept. 30, 2017, Sporting has gone 4-0-1 in the fixture with 17 goals scored and only three conceded. That run includes a 6-0 thumping in April 2018, highlighted by captain Johnny Russell’s hat trick, as well as a season-opening 3-1 away win in February 2020 that saw Gadi Kinda and Alan Pulido score on their MLS debuts.

Sporting and Vancouver also met in the MLS is Back Tournament Round of 16 last July. Vermes’ side outshot Vancouver 36-8 but the match was ultimately decided in penalty kicks after a scoreless draw, with goalkeeper Tim Melia making two saves to propel Sporting to a 3-1 shootout win.

In accordance with updated health protocols issued by the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, Sporting Kansas City announced earlier this week that home matches at Children’s Mercy Park will return to full capacity beginning May 29 when the club plays Houston.

Capacity for Sunday’s contest against Vancouver will remain limited to approximately 6,500 fans with current health and safety protocols in place. Additionally, single-game tickets for all of Sporting’s remaining MLS home matches in 2021 are now available at SeatGeek.com.
