Flash flood warning issued

A flash flood warning was issued at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, May 16, for east central Wyandotte County.

It will be in effect until 12:30 a.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

The flash flood warning also is in effect for central Johnson County, Kansas, and west central Jackson County, Missouri.

At 6:30 p.m. Sunday, thunderstorms were producing heavy rain, according to the weather service. There were reports of flowing water over roadways in several locations across the area, including Brush Creek, the weather service said.

Between 2.5 to 3.5 inches of rain have fallen, according to the weather service. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible, according to the weather service.

Flash flooding is already occurring, the weather service said.

Motorists are advised to turn around when encountering flooded roads and go in a different direction, according to the weather service. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.

The National Weather Service also has issued an urban and small stream flood advisory for southern Wyandotte County.

This advisory is in effect until 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

Fatal accident reported on I-70

A fatal accident was reported about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, May 16, on I-70 near the Turner Diagonal exit in Kansas City, Kansas, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper’s crash report.

A Chevy Malibu and a Chevy Camaro were westbound on I-70 when, for an unknown reason, the Malibu became broadside in the highway and was struck by the Camaro, the trooper’s report stated. The Malibu rolled and came to rest in the north ditch, the report stated.

The driver of the Malibu, Amiyah S. Hatten, age 21, Kansas City, Missouri, suffered a fatal injury, according to the report. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the trooper’s report.

The driver of the Camaro, a 20-year-old man from Kansas City, Missouri, had no apparent injury, the report stated.

A 19-year-old woman passenger in the Camaro from Wilmington, California, had no apparent injury, according to the report.

A third passenger in the Camaro, a 20-year-old woman from Wilmington, California, had a possible serious injury and was taken to a hospital in Kansas City, Kansas, the report stated.
