Storms, rain in forecast today

Scattered thunderstorms are possible this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

The main threat will be hail up to quarter-size and winds that could gust up to 18 mph, the weather service said.

Today’s high will be 59, with temperatures in the 50s most of this week, according to the forecast. Temperatures will rise into the 60s on Sunday.

Additional strong to severe storms are possible Tuesday night, with hail as the primary threat, according to the weather service.

The rain will continue through Thursday, with 1 to 2 inches possible in many locations by the end of the week, the weather service said. Higher amounts are possible locally, and river flooding is possible in the region.

Today, there is a 60 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., then rain likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 4 p.m., the weather service said. The high will be near 59 with an east wind of 9 to 11 mph, gusting as high as 18 mph. Between a tenth and quarter-inch of rai is possible.

Tonight, there is a 60 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms likely before 11 p.m., then a slight chance of rain between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 40, with a north wind of 3 to 6 mph. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain is expected.

Tuesday, it will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 57 and a light north, northeast wind becoming east 5 to 9 mph in the morning, the weather service said.

Tuesday night, there is a 50 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms after 1 a.m., with a low around 43, according to the weather service, and an east northeast wind of 8 to 11 mph. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain is possible.

Wednesday, there is an 80 percent chance of rain, then more rain and possibly a thunderstorm after 1 p.m., the weather service said. The high will be near 51 with an east northeast wind of 14 to 17 mph, gusting as high as 29 mph. Between a half and three-quarters inch of rain is likely.

FDA warns consumers about products falsely claiming to treat COVID-19

The FDA is warning consumer about CBD products that are misleading people into thinking they can prevent, treat or cure COVID-19.

According to the FDA, a company selling CBD products was sent a warning letter in March. The letter stated, in part: “We request that you take immediate action to cease the sale of any unapproved and unauthorized products for the mitigation, prevention, treatment, diagnosis, or cure of COVID-19.”

According to the FDA, new drugs such as CBD products may not be legally introduced or delivered for introduction into interstate commerce without prior approval from the FDA.

Consumers concerned about COVID-19 should consult with their health care provider, the FDA stated.

COVID-19 case numbers reported

Wyandotte County reported an increase of 58 COVID-19 cases on Friday, March 12, since Thursday, for a cumulative 17,870 cases. There was a cumulative total of 278 deaths reported, no change since Thursday. Friday was the last case number update.

The Mid-America Regional Council’s COVID-19 dashboard reported 161,339 cumulative COVID-19 cases on Sunday. The daily average of new hospitalizations was 77. Some of the local health departments are not reporting case numbers to MARC on the weekends.

The state of Kansas reported 297,748 cumulative COVID-19 cases on Friday, March 12, an increase of 519 cases since Wednesday. There were a total cumulative 4,824 deaths, a decrease after a review of deaths. The last case update was Friday.

The Johns Hopkins University COVID-19 dashboard on Sunday night reported 29,438,222 cases in the United States, with 534,880 total deaths reported nationwide.

COVID-19 tests scheduled Monday

Free COVID-19 tests will be available from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, March 15, at the Oak Ridge Baptist Church, 9301 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas.

The tests are through the Wyandotte County Health Equity Task Force. Groceries will be given away to those who get tested, while supplies last. Appointments are not necessary. COVID-19 testing will be at 9 a.m. Monday, March 15, at Pierson Community Center, 1800 S. 55th, Kansas City, Kansas. Tests are through WellHealth. Appointments are required, check with the website, www.gogettested.com/Kansas, for available appointment times.

Another COVID-19 testing site will be at Lowe’s, 6920 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas, at 8 a.m. Monday, March 15. Tests are through WellHealth. Appointments are required, check with the website, www.gogettested.com/Kansas, for available appointment times.

Unified Government Health Department COVID-19 testing and vaccine sites are scheduled to be open on Monday, March 15. The test site at the former Kmart building at 78th and State will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, March 15. Appointments are not needed for COVID-19 tests and vaccinations for those over 65 on Monday. Walk-in vaccinations are open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday. There is also a UG Health Department location for COVID-19 testing and vaccinations at the former Best Buy store, 10500 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas. A third Health Department site, for vaccinations, is at the Kansas National Guard Armory at 100 S. 20th.

The Health Department is offering saliva COVID-19 tests to the public. Tests from the Health Department are free for those who live or work in Wyandotte County.

The tests are open to asymptomatic people as well as those who have symptoms or have been exposed to COVID-19. Check with the UG Health Department’s Facebook page to see if there have been any changes in the schedule. Bring something that shows that you live or work in Wyandotte County, such as a utility bill.

Walk-in vaccines available for those 65 and older

The UG Health Department is offering COVID-19 vaccines Monday through Friday for Wyandotte County residents who are 65 and older.

Those Wyandotte County residents who are 65 or older can walk in and do not need an appointment from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday at the vaccination sites at the former Kmart store at 7836 State Ave., the former Best Buy store at 10500 Parallel Parkway and the Kansas National Guard Armory at 100 S. 20th.

Those who are critical workers still need appointments for vaccines.

All those 65 and older should bring an ID or other proof of age, such as a driver’s license, government ID or birth certificate, as well as something showing their Wyandotte County address, such as an ID or a piece of mail.

Those Wyandotte County residents who are younger than 65, and any Wyandotte County resident, may fill out a form expressing interest in getting a vaccine at WycoVaccines.org or call 3-1-1.

Blue Devil volleyball vaults to third with fifth straight win

Kansas City Kansas Community College’s surging volleyball team stretched its current winning streak to five in a row with a 3-0 shutout at Hesston College Saturday.

The Blue Devils (12-7) have not lost a set in four of the five wins and vaulted into third place in the Jayhawk Conference heading into a Monday engagement at Labette and a home duel with Fort Scott Thursday. Both are set for 6:30 p.m.

Johnson County leads the Jayhawk at 12-2 followed by Highland (10-3), KCKCC (10-6), Neosho County (8-5) and Fort Scott (6-6).

“We had an excellent performance at Hesston; worked hard; a true team win,” KCKCC coach Mary Bruno-Ballou said. “We’re a group peaking at the right time heading into the final 2½ weeks of the season.”

The Blue Devils made quick work of Hesston, winning handily 25-12, 25-11 and 25-19, their fifth 3-0 sweep of the season.

Offensively, Cassidy Crist had nine kills, Mia Tomasic eight, Nicole Hughes seven and Trinity Holland six in an extremely well-balanced attack.
