Public hearing on closing times for bars and restaurants among items on UG committee agenda Monday night

A public hearing on closing times for bars and restaurants, under COVID-19 restrictions, is on the agenda for the Unified Government Economic Development and Finance Committee tonight.

A Zoom meeting is planned, with the EDF meeting following the Neighborhood and Community Development meeting. The NCD meeting starts at 5 p.m.

Also on the agenda for Monday night is the adoption of the second amendment to the multi-sport stadium venture agreement, which increases the tax on tickets to Sporting KC games.

This agreement would increase the ticket tax by $1.25 to cover debt service for the parking improvements and ground lease costs associated with the parking improvements, according to the agenda. The amendment would increase the ticket tax on Sporting KC tickets from $2.25 to $3.50 per ticket.

A brownfields assessment coalition grant, with the Kansas City Regional Brownfields Assessment Coalition, is on the agenda. The agreement is with the Mid-America Regional Coalition, Kansas City, Missouri and Jackson County, Missouri. The grant for $600,000 would be equally divided by coalition members, and is funded by an agreement with the EPA.

Industrial revenue bonds up to $20 million for a Kansas City Kansas Community College student housing project also are on the agenda. It is a sales tax exemption only.

In addition, the committee will consider a proposed cash and investment policy. It is part of an annual review.

Also on the agenda is an update on business efforts regarding COVID-19 and CARES Act grant funding.

A report by the UG Health Department on COVID-19 also is planned.

At the Neighborhood and Community Development Committee meeting at 5 p.m., there will be a summary of the 2020 activities of the Land Bank.

Police note

Police investigating possible identity theft at Village West

Officers were dispatched to a business at 5:13 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3, in the 1600 block of Village West Parkway to investigate possible identity theft.

Two persons had been detained by security after receiving merchandise that was paid for online, according to a social media report by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department. The items had not been authorized by the card holder, according to the report.

The suspect used a paper identification with the victim’s information and then signed the victim’s name to receive the merchandise, the report stated.

Additional credit cards not belonging to the individual who went to the store were also in his possession, the report stated. The person was taken into custody and booked into the Wyandotte County Jail, police stated.

Follow-up work is planned to locate potential victims, according to the report.

Dense fog advisory in effect

A dense fog advisory is in effect in Wyandotte County through noon Monday, Jan. 4, according to the National Weather Service.

Visibilities are down to three-quarters of a mile in some areas, the weather service said.

Freezing fog can cause surfaces to be slick, and motorists need to be careful of bridges and overpasses, according to the weather service. Also, those who are walking need to be careful of sidewalks.

In the week ahead, there will be a chance of rain on Wednesday, and possibly, snow late Wednesday night.

Today, there will be patchy dense fog before noon, according to the National Weather Service forecast. The high will be near 43. It will gradually become sunny. A southwest wind of 6 to 10 mph will become northwest in the afternoon.

Tonight, it will be partly cloudy, with a low of 21 and a northwest wind of 6 mph becoming calm in the evening, according to the weather service.

Tuesday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 48 and a calm wind becoming south southeast 5 to 8 mph in the morning, the weather service said.

Tuesday night, it will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 33 and a southeast wind of 6 to 8 mph, according to the weather service.

Wednesday, there is a 30 percent chance of rain, mostly after noon, the weather service said. The high will be near 43 with a south southeast wind of 6 mph becoming east northeast in the afternoon. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain is possible.

Wednesday night, there is a 40 percent chance of rain before 10 p.m., then a chance of rain and snow between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., then a slight chance of snow after 4 a.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 31. Less than a tenth of an inch of precipitation is possible.
