UG Commission to hear update on health orders

The Unified Government Commission is scheduled to hear an update on the new COVID-19 health order in Wyandotte County at tonight’s commission meeting.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Nov. 19 and will be remote. It will be on UGTV on cable television, and also on YouTube, as well as on Zoom.

Besides the health update, the UG Commission will consider an ordinance to terminate the Westfield Shopping Center Community Improvement District.

Also on the agenda is a public hearing to consider a resolution approving an amendment to the 2019 annual action plan incorporating CARES Act funding to the Community Development Block Grant program.

The commission also will consider an ordinance to implement a Complete Street citywide policy.

Taxable industrial revenue bonds for the PQ Corp. project, not to exceed $18 million, also are on the agenda. A second ordinance would issue up to $2 million in IRBs.

Another IRB issue on the agenda is for the NP Turner Industrial project, not to exceed $28 million.

Also before the commission is a resolution for assignment and assumption of lease agreements and development agreements for the Village West Apartments II project.

Windy, high near 74 today

Today, southwest winds gusting as high as 45 mph are possible this morning through the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

The higher winds could lead to elevated fire conditions, the weather service said.

Temperatures will drop about 10 degrees on Friday, then another 20 degrees on Saturday.

The next chance of rain will be Friday night through Sunday, according to the weather service.

Today, it will be sunny with a high near 74, the weather service said. It will be windy, with a south southwest wind of 17 to 22 mph decreasing to 9 to 14 mph in the afternoon. Winds may gust up to 45 mph.

Tonight, it will be partly cloudy, with a low of 51 and a south southwest wind of 5 to 7 mph becoming northwest after midnight, according to the weather service.

Friday, it will be partly sunny, with a high near 63 and a light north northwest wind becoming north northeast 8 to 13 mph in the morning, the weather service said. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph.

Friday night, there is a 30 percent chance of rain after midnight, with a high near 47 and a northeast wind of 9 mph, according to the weather service. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain is possible.

Saturday, there is a 60 percent chance of rain, mainly after noon, with a high of 47, the weather service said. An east northeast wind of 9 to 11 mph will gust as high as 18 mph. Between a quarter and half-inch of rain is possible.

Saturday night, there is a 60 percent chance of rain, mainly before midnight, according to the weather service. The low will be around 39. Between a tenth and quarter-inch of rain is possible.

Sunday, there is a 30 percent chance of rain before noon. The high will be near 50, the weather service said.

Fatal accident reported at 18th and Merriam Lane

A fatal accident was reported at 1:40 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, near 18th and Merriam Lane, according to a spokesman for the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

A vehicle was southbound on 18th Street when it took the ramp to Merriam Lane, according to the report.

At the bottom of the ramp the vehicle continued across Merriam and off the roadway, where it wrecked, according to the report.

The passenger in the vehicle, a female in her late 40s, was dead at the scene, according to police. The driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, police stated.

The accident is under investigation by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department’s fatality accident team, according to the spokesman.
