Many COVID-19 cases in Wyandotte County and in Kansas linked to outbreaks

Kansas currently has 145 active outbreaks of COVID-19, according to information from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

Since cases have been recorded here, the state has had a total of 370 outbreaks accounting for 7,853 cases and 247 deaths, according to KDHE statistics.

Meat packing plants had the highest number of cases in Kansas, with 3,276 cases and 17 deaths. There are 9 active meat packing outbreaks currently in Kansas.

Also high on the list were long-term care facilities, with 1,377 cases and 196 deaths statewide, according to KDHE figures. This is the category that had the most deaths.

Sports outbreaks are now listed, with 9 clusters reported in the state, including 3 active now, accounting for 64 cases.

Day cares and schools have had 15 clusters in the state, including 5 active clusters, accounting for 63 cases, according to KDHE.

Gatherings have resulted in 59 clusters in the state, including 21 active, which accounted for 653 cases and 17 deaths, according to KDHE statistics.

Private business has 143 clusters in the state, including 47 active, that accounted for 1,080 cases and 7 deaths, according to KDHE.

Several Wyandotte County outbreaks reported

The Unified Government’s outbreak location map, located on the UG’s COVID-19 website, shows several locations for COVID-19 outbreaks in Wyandotte County. This map included places that had five or more cases.

The locations include workplaces, meat packing plants and long-term care facilities.

Outbreaks from June and earlier that are not active now were not included in this list. Outbreaks on the UG COVID-19 map here since July include:

• National Beef Packaging, 100 Osage Ave., Kansas City, Kansas, 53 cases, last known case reported July 21.

• Bonner Springs Nursing and Rehab, 520 E. Morse Ave., Bonner Springs, long-term care facility, 47 cases, 5 deaths, last known case reported July 18.

• Medicalodge of Kansas City, 6500 Greeley, Kansas City, Kansas, long-term care facility, 20 cases, last known case reported July 20.

• Tyson, 4612 Speaker Road, Kansas City, Kansas, 6 cases, last known case reported July 21.

• Ignite Medical Resorts, 3910 Rainbow Blvd., Kansas City, Kansas, long-term care facility, 17 cases, last known case reported July 23.

• Smithfield-Capstone Logistics, 2441 S. 98th St., Edwardsville, 15 cases, last known case reported July 16.

• Plastic Packaging Technologies, 750 S. 65th St., Kansas City ,Kansas, 5 cases, last known case reported July 15.

• Edwardsville Care and Rehab, 750 Blake St., Edwardsville, Kansas, long-term care facility, 5 cases, last known case reported July 6.

• Nebraska Furniture Mart, 1601 Village West Parkway, 6 cases, last known case reported July 16.

New COVID-19 case reported in Larned facility

Corrections, according to the state, had nine clusters, with six of them now active, that accounted for 1,054 cases and six deaths.

On Friday, the Kansas Department of Corrections announced that one staff member at the Larned, Kansas, Correctional Mental Health Facility has tested positive for COVID-19.

The person is a woman over age 40, according to the statement. The Larned facility has 598 beds.

Wyandotte County reported 55 new COVID-19 cases from Friday to Saturday, with a cumulative total of 4,864, according to the Unified Government COVID-19 website. There were no new deaths; the cumulative total is 99 in Wyandotte County.

Kansas reported an increase of 921 COVID-19 cases from Wednesday to Friday, according to figures from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. There were 12 more deaths from Wednesday to Friday. The total cumulative number of positive cases was 30,638 on Friday, and the total cumulative deaths were 380 in the state.

Johnson County reported 5,637 cases on Friday, as compared to 5,434 cases on Wednesday, an increase of 203 cases, according to KDHE statistics.

Leavenworth County reported 1,487 cases on Friday, compared to 1,472 on Wednesday, an increase of 15 cases, according to KDHE figures.

Sporting KC to return to home matches on Aug. 25

Sporting Kansas City will return to MLS competition on Aug. 21 with six matches, including a home match on Aug. 25.

In, all, three home matches are planned at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas, according to a Sporting KC announcement. The home matches are Aug. 21 with Houston, Sept. 2 with Dallas and Sept. 13 with Minnesota. There also will be three away matches.

In conjunction with today’s schedule release, Sporting Kansas City has also announced the club’s plan for reduced-capacity, socially distanced seating for the home matches at Children’s Mercy Park during the first phase.

Following detailed safety protocols developed in conjunction with the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, Sporting’s next three home matches at Children’s Mercy Park will be held at a reduced capacity of approximately 14 percent, according to the announcement.

The stadium seating plan will adhere to proper social distancing guidelines and face coverings will be mandatory for fans, along with a number of other new safety measures including a tailored ingress timing plan that promotes physical distancing upon entry.

The reduced-capacity plan at Children’s Mercy Park was developed through significant collaboration between Sporting Kansas City and the Unified Government before receiving local and state approval, according to the announcement.

“The safety and well-being of fans, players and staff at Children’s Mercy Park remains our top priority,” said Dr. Neal Erickson, primary care physician at Sporting Kansas City. “After consulting extensively with local officials, government authorities and public health experts, we feel confident about the detailed safety protocols and procedures in place at Sporting KC home matches. We will continue to monitor the evolving public health landscape and adapt accordingly.”

Tickets for the next three home matches will be available only to Sporting Kansas City season ticket members via lotteries and no single-game tickets will be sold by the club on SeatGeek.com or at the stadium box office. COVID-19 testing protocols will continue to play an important role in the league’s competition framework, according to the announcement. MLS continues to work closely with the league’s infectious disease advisers as well as advisers for the MLSPA on the plan for testing.

All clubs are forming testing partnerships with a local certified lab, and all players, technical staff and essential club staff will be tested every other day, including the day before each match day, according to the announcement. Teams will also take chartered flights, and for the majority of road trips will arrive in the host market on match day and depart after the match later that evening.

All MLS clubs will play 18 additional league matches in a phased approach, concluding with “Decision Day” on Nov. 8 to complete the 23 –game regular season. The MLS Cup Playoffs will begin Nov. 20 with 18 teams and will culminuate with the 25th MLS Cup on Dec. 12.

Major League Soccer’s return to play in the home markets of all 26 clubs will feature comprehensive health and safety protocols, including regular testing of players, coaches and essential staff for COVID-19, according to the announcement.

MLS plans to announce the balance of the regular season schedule by early September as the league continues to work with infectious disease experts, league and club medical personnel, and government officials in all markets in charting a course for the completion of the 2020 season.

Each of Sporting’s next six matches will air live on FOX Sports Kansas City or FOX Sports Kansas City Plus in Kansas, Nebraska and western Missouri. Additionally, all six games will air locally in English on Sports Radio 810 WHB or one of its sister stations, and in Spanish on La Grande 1340 AM.

Police notes

Shooting reported on South 10th

A shooting was reported at 9:31 p.m. Aug. 7 in the 1900 block of South 10th, according to a social media post by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

Officers were dispatched to the address on a shots fired call. When they arrived, they found that the residence had been struck five times, according to the report.

There were no injuries. Detectives and crime scene investigators responded, according to the report.

Convicted felon allegedly in possession of stolen handgun

During a traffic stop about 12:05 a.m. Aug 7 in the 1000 block of Gilmore, officers found that a suspect provided a false name, according to a social media report by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

When they confirmed the suspect’s true name, officers found he was a convicted felon in Kansas and Missouri and was in possession of a stolen handgun, according to the report.

Detectives responded to take a suspect statement, according to the report, and the suspect was booked on a 48-hour hold.
