Public hearing on stormwater rates planned at UG meeting Thursday

A public hearing on proposed stormwater rates is on the agenda for the Thursday, Jan. 8, Unified Government Commission meeting.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 8 at the Commission Chambers, lobby level, City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas.

Jeff Fisher, executive director of public works for the UG, is scheduled to make a presentation on the proposed stormwater rates.

An increase in stormwater rates was previously proposed, and went back for more discussion and input from the community after some opposition. According to UG information, the UG staff has spent a year in gathering more response from the community.

Also on the UG agenda Jan. 8 are some items concerning zoning for the American Royal buildings, including a hotel, near 117th and State Avenue.

Several other planning and zoning items also are on the Jan. 8 agenda.

Before the regular meeting, there will be a special session of the UG Commission at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 8 in the Commission Chambers, lobby level, City Hall. According to the meeting agenda, the commission plans to recess from the Commission Chambers to the ninth floor conference room for a closed executive session on litigation.

NAACP to meet Jan. 14

The Kansas City, Kansas, Branch NAACP will meet Tuesday, Jan. 14, for an executive and general membership meeting.

The executive meeting will begin at 6 p.m., and the membership meeting will follow at 7 p.m. at the Neighborhood Resource Center, 4953 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Doors will open at 5 p.m. The NAACP chapter meetings now will be scheduled on the second Tuesday of each month.

The guest speaker for January’s meeting will be Wyandotte County District Attorney Mark Dupree.

NAACP members will set the agenda for the year. All members are encouraged to attend, and the public is welcome.

The NAACP is a nonpartisan organization whose mission is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of rights and of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination, a spokesman stated.

Police notes

Shots hit residence on Haskell

A shooting into an occupied dwelling was reported about 8 p.m. Jan. 7 in the 1700 block of Haskell Avenue, according to a social media post by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

Officers were investigating a shots fired call and found empty casings in the area, according to the report. The officers noticed gunfire on a house, and contacted the victim to confirm it was new damage, the report stated.

Pursuit reported on I-70

Felony eluding and possession of stolen property was reported at 12:33 a.m. Jan. 8 in the 1800 block of I-70, according to police.

Officers found a vehicle with a stolen license plate on it, and attempted to stop the vehicle, according to a social media post by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department. The vehicle failed to yield and a vehicle pursuit was begun, according to the post.

The driver lost control, and two suspects fled on foot, the report stated. The suspects were found hiding in the area and were taken into custody without further incident, according to the report.
