Children’s Mercy Urgent Care opening delayed


Because of freezing precipitation and potentially hazardous travel with icy conditions, the three Kansas City area Children’s Mercy Urgent Care centers will open at 3 p.m. today.

Ride KC services suspended until 2 p.m.


RideKC has suspended service for KCATA, Independence and Unified Government Transit routes due to road conditions. 482 Overland Park Flex in Johnson County is also suspended until 2 p.m. Service will resume at 2 p.m. when temperatures are expected to rise. Other Johnson County bus routes have completed their morning rush hour. Delays are expected on midday service routes due to road conditions and traffic on area highways.


RideKC Freedom paratransit is suspending service for the rest of the day and is in Phase D of the Inclement Weather Plan. RideKC Freedom will only make trips to dialysis, medical appointments and return trips for those who already traveled this morning.


Customers should expect delays as crews work to clear streets. Once service resumes, customers are encouraged to dress warmly, listen to local newscasts for up-to-date information, and use the online tools to find out if their bus is delayed. The Regional Call Center, 816-221-0660, is open until 7 p.m. today.

Airport flights canceled

Many flights at Kansas City International Airport were canceled this morning, as the airfield was temporarily closed from freezing rain, and plans to reopen soon. For flight updates, see https://www.flykci.com/. A KCI slideoff was reported Friday morning.

A winter weather advisory is in effect in Wyandotte County through 6 p.m. Friday.

Freezing rain and sleet is moving into the area this morning, in the forecast before 2 p.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

Sleet, freezing rain and snow will change to sleet or freezing rain, then to rain from south to north, the weather service said. Temperatures will warm to 36 this afternoon.

The Friday morning commute was affected, with hazardous conditions in areas north of I-70, the weather service said. Travel is not advised, but if traveling, motorists were urged to slow down and use caution. The latest road conditions can
be obtained by calling 5 1 1, or visiting kandrive.org or kcscout.net.

At 8:15 a.m., the I-635 northbound exit at Horizons Parkway, just north of Wyandotte County, was closed, KC Scout reported. There was also an accident reported at I-635 and K-5. Another accident was reported on I-435, just south of Wyandotte County.

Some minor flooding is possible in the region late Friday into Saturday, the weather service said.

Saturday morning temperatures will drop into the 20s, refreezing anything that is wet, according to the weather service.

Today, freezing rain and sleet are in the forecast before 2 p.m., then freezing rain between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., followed by rain after 4 p.m., the weather service said. The sleet could be heavy at times. The high will be near 36. A south southeast wind of 9 to 16 mph will gust as high as 32 mph. From one-tenth to one-twentieth of an inch of ice accumulation is possible. Sleet accumulation will be less than a half-inch.

Tonight, rain is likely before 5 a.m., then a slight chance of snow, according to the weather service. The low will be around 27, with a south southeast wind of 11 to 18 mph becoming west northwest after midnight. Winds may gust up to 30 mph. Little or no snow accumulation is expected.

Saturday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 33, the weather service said. A northwest wind of 13 to 21 will gust to 34 mph.

Saturday night, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 16 and a west northwest wind of 5 to 9 mph becoming light northwest, according to the weather service.

Sunday, it will be sunny with a high near 25 and a north wind of 5 to 7 mph, the weather service said.

Sunday night, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 8, according to the weather service.

Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, it will be sunny, with a high near 25, the weather service said.
