Homicide victim identified

Kansas City, Kansas, police today identified the victim of a homicide on Jan. 24 in the 8000 block of Greeley Avenue.

The victim was Emilio Lopez, an 18-year-old man who lived in Kansas City, Kansas, according to a police spokesman.

Police responded to the address on a reported shooting, and when they arrived around 7:30 p.m. Jan. 24, they saw a man deceased on the front porch, according to the spokesman.

The incident is under investigation by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division, which is encouraging anyone with information to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS.

Kansas City Kansas Community College’s Brandon Burgette has his first Jayhawk Conference win as a head coach, thanks to a workman-like 88-69 win over Hesston Saturday.

Building a 15-point lead in the first half, the Blue Devils never trailed in ending Hesston’s 9-game winning streak. The loss dropped the Larks to 13-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play while KCKCC (8-12) won for the sixth time in the last 10 games.

Enjoying the win will be short-lived, The Blue Devils are right back in action Monday when they host Park University’s junior varsity at 6 p.m. (a game originally scheduled for 7 p.m.). Then it’s back on the road for the Blue Devils, who are at Fort Scott Wednesday (7:30 p.m.) and Highland Saturday (3 p.m.).

The Blue Devils took control against Hesston with long-range shooting and domination of the defensive rebounding.

KCKCC outscored Hesston 24-3 from 3-point in the first half, knocking down 8-of-20 treys while the Larks managed just one three in eight attempts. Deron McDaniel had three 3-pointers and Ezekiel Lopes and Jalen Davis two each in the opening surge.

The Blue Devils also limited Hesston to just one first half offensive rebound on the way to a 40-34 edge on the boards. Robert Rhodes had a game high 12 rebounds, six in each half, while Jermaine Yarbough added seven and Calvin Slaughter six.

KCKCC opened a 27-12 lead in the first 13 minutes, had a 43-34 advantage at halftime and then expanded it to as many as 23 points in the second half.

“The guys stepped up and made shots in the zone,” Burgette said. “We also did a good job guarding the three and gang rebounding.”

Hesston managed just 4-of-19 3-pointers for 21.1 percent and 39.6 percent overall. Meanwhile, the Blue Devils were an identical 15-of-34 each half for 44.1 percent.

Six Blue Devils accounted for all but two points. Davis had 19 points, McDaniel 18, Lopes 17 and Slaughter 15 to lead the way while DeAngelo Ball added nine and Rhodes eight. Slaughter and Ball shared assist honors with five while Slaughter also had four steals and Lopes and Rhodes three each.

“We let one slip away Wednesday,” Burgette said. “Today, we came back with a lot of energy, played fast, made shots and sped them up to run in transition. A good win.”

Police notes

Shooting into residence reported

A shooting into an occupied dwelling was reported at 5:50 a.m., according to a social media post by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

A victim reported hearing gunfire and also noticed the house had been shot, according to the report.

Officers noticed another house in the area also had been shot, and contacted those victims.

In the two houses, there were more than nine people, including juveniles, police noted. There were no reported injuries.

Shooting reported on Tauromee

A shooting was reported at 12:43 p.m. Jan. 26 in the 3200 block of Tauromee Avenue, according to a social media post by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

An unknown suspect shot the victim in the chest and then fled, according to the report. The victim had non-life-threatening injuries and was not cooperative with the investigation, according to the report.

Vehicle hits building on State Avenue

An injury accident was reported at 8:45 p.m. Jan. 26 in the 7000 block of State Avenue, according to a social media report by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

Officers responded to the injury accident and found a vehicle that previously failed to yield to officers, the report stated. The driver had already fled, and the vehicle was listed as stolen, according to police.

It is believed the driver was injured, but no other injuries were reported, police stated.

Police vehicle hit while on side of Kansas Avenue

A police vehicle was hit while it was on the side of Kansas Avenue, in the 7700 block, at 11:05 p.m. Jan. 26, according to a social media post by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

Officers were stopped on the side of the road with their overhead lights on, about to transport a subject to a safe location, according to police.

A suspect hit the back of the patrol vehicle, and both vehicles were disabled, police stated. The suspect was in possession of illegal drugs, drug paraphernalia and open alcohol containers, police stated.

The suspect was intoxicated and was taken into custody, police stated.

There were minor injuries and the officers were taken to a hospital, the report stated.
