No. 13 Cowley hands Blue Devils first Jayhawk loss, 2-1

Kansas City Kansas Community College had seven shots on goal in the second half alone against nationally ranked Cowley College Wednesday. Unfortunately, none found the net.

“You must capitalize on your opportunities; if you do not, you will not win these games,” KCKCC head coach Ruben Rodriguez said after the Blue Devils’ 2-1 loss to the No. 13 ranked and unbeaten Tigers (5-0). “We played well; we just need to be more prepared mentally to play at a higher level.”

The loss evened KCKCC’s record at 2-2-1 overall and 1-1 in the Jayhawk Conference heading into a collision with Johnson County (3-2) in Overland Park next Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.

Cowley County, meanwhile, took over the Jayhawk lead at 2-0, ahead of runnerup JCCC (1-0) and third place KCKCC and Neosho County, both 1-1.

“Kansas City is a very physical team and relentless in what they do,” Cowley Coach Ruy Voz said. “They marked our midfielders very well but we played really well on the flanks and found a way to win.”

Cowley grabbed a 1-0 lead 27 minutes into the game on Elluan Martins Gomes’ eighth goal of the season. The goal was assisted by Murilo Ramos.

KCKCC pulled even with four minutes left in the half when sophomore Ignacio Sarasol scored off a corner kick from Wyandotte freshman Jorge Fernandez. Cowley’s winning goal came with 21 minutes remaining, Ramos scoring on an assist from Hikaru Tanaka.

The Blue Devils had a 16-14 edge in total shots. KCKCC goalkeeper Bosco Pery was credited with nine saves; Ramiro Diez eight for Cowley.

Piper running back La’James White scored five touchdowns in a runaway 57-6 home victory over the Baldwin Bulldogs on Friday evening.

White picked up two rushing touchdowns, including a 76-yarder. He also collected three scores through the air from quarterback Karson Schaunaman. White primarily used his speed to outrace Baldwin’s defense around the ends.

Schaunaman connected with receivers Camaro Scott and Jack Robinson for two more touchdowns. Running back Brandon Snell rounded out the scoring with a 43-yard touchdown run.

Piper’s defense was just as dominant as the offense, forcing fumbles on consecutive possessions in the first half and quickly turning the game into a rout.

Junior linebacker Branden Martin led the defense with 11 tackles and a fumble recovery. Freshman defensive back Mehiki Frazier had an interception in the first half.

The Pirates have started the season with two dominating wins. They’ll face off with Atchison next Friday in Piper’s homecoming game. A major challenge will come in three weeks when they play the Tonganoxie Chieftains (also 2-0) on the road.

Renaissance Festival continues Saturday and Sunday
 The Renaissance Festival will continue from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 130th and State Avenue, Bonner Springs. Tickets are $22.95 for adults and $13.95 for children 5 to 12 years old. Clown workshop planned at Turner Library
 The Turner Community Library, 831 S. 55th St., will be the site for a Kansas City Clowns presentation on how to be a clown. The workshop will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Bear’s Den at the library. At the free workshop, teens and adults will learn the basics of being a clown. Local professionals will conduct the workshop. Family Lego Club to meet
 The Family Lego Club will meet from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the craft room, West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd St., Kansas City, Kansas. Those attending may build anything they want. Legos will be available. All ages are welcome.

American Royal Barbecue to be Saturday at Kansas Speedway
 The American Royal Barbecue will be held this weekend at the Kansas Speedway, at I-70 and I-435 in Kansas City, Kansas. The event will include the Cowtown Family Fun Fest, Pit Road Picnic, classic car show, live local music, barbecue demonstrations and a beer garden. Food will be available for purchase. Tickets are $25 for adults and $9 for children under 12. Event parking is $10 per vehicle. Family story time planned
 Family story time is planned from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the youth services craft room at the Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The event includes stories, dance and singing. The program is geared to ages 2 to 6.

Mexican independence day to be celebrated at library
 Mexican independence day will be celebrated from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the South Branch Library, 3104 Strong Ave., Kansas City, Kansas, in conference room A-B. There will be folkloric dance, music crafts and piñata. The event is for all ages.

KCKCC to hold home softball game Saturday

Kansas City Kansas Community College will hold a home softball opener at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, playing Ottawa University. The game will be at 7250 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas.

Design a bookmark at craft program
A children’s craft program from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., will be offered. The program, for ages 4-18, will allow participants to design their own bookmarks. All materials will be provided. The program will be in the craft room. Alcott Arts Center plans Shakespeare comedy, superheroes and sports art exhibit Saturday
A Shakespeare comedy and a superheroes and sports art exhibit are planned for Saturday at the Alcott Arts Center, 180 S. 18th, Kansas City, Kansas. The 11th year of the Alcott Shakespeare performances will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, at the Alcott, said Chris Green, Alcott executive director. The play also will be performed next weekend. Admission is a $5 donation. The director of “Two People from Verona” will be Susan Proctor, who has directed two Shakespeare plays previous at Alcott, Green said. There also will be an art show at 6 p.m. followed by a reception at 6:30 p.m. for artists Darryl Wood, Anthony Oropeza, Marquis Jamison and Simone Bealer. ‘Steel Magnolias’ to present gospel music program
 “The Steel Magnolias” from San Marcos, Texas, will present a choreographed program of inspirational gospel music at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Bent Knee Cowboy Church, 13415 S. 142nd St., Bonner Springs, Kansas. The group has sung throughout America and Canada for the past 13 years,and gave as many as 150 concerts. The theme of this year’s concert is “Joy in the Journey.” There is no charge for the concert, which is open to the public.
