Police officers to test body cameras starting today

About 30 police officers will wear body cameras this week in a technical evaluation of the program, according to a Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department spokesman.

The officers will be using cameras from different vendors in the evaluation, according to a police department news release.

The evaluation will lead to the procurement of the technology designed to increase transparency, accountability and reduce agency liability, according to the news release.

The evaluation program will run from Sept. 16 through Oct. 16, according to the spokesman.

Each of the officers will be issued a camera after receiving training from each vendor. The officers will report their experiences with each camera across several criteria, which will be factored into the final vendor selection, the news release stated.

Officers in the program are receiving instructions through the department’s body camera policy, according to the spokesman. It includes requirements for when cameras should be turned on and when recording should be activated.
