Flood warning issued for Missouri River

The Missouri River at I-435 in Wyandotte County is under a flood warning from Tuesday morning to Friday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. The river could go into minor flood stage then.

A flood warning has been issued for the Missouri River at Parkville, which includes the Wyandotte County area.

The Parkville gauge is on I-435 over the Missouri River between Wyandotte County, Kansas, and Platte County, Missouri.

According to the National Weather Service, the flood warning continues from Tuesday morning to Friday afternoon for the Missouri River at Parkville. The river is forecast to rise to minor flood stage at that point.

At 9:45 a.m. Sunday the river stage was 22.3 feet where flood stage is 25 feet, and the Missouri River was forecast to rise to above flood stage by Tuesday morning and nearly 25.6 feet by early Wednesday morning, according to the weather service. The river will fall back below flood stage by early Thursday afternoon, according to the weather service.

On Sunday morning, the Wolcott area of Kansas City, Kansas, which is near I-435 and the Missouri River, was not flooded.

This area near the river has already flooded two times previously this year.

In addition to the Missouri River flood warning, a flash flood watch remains in effect for Wyandotte County until 7 p.m. tonight.

A 70 percent chance of rain is in Sunday’s forecast. Today, there is a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 2 p.m., then showers and possibly a thunderstorm between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., followed by a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4 p.m., the weather service said. Today’s high will be near 75 with a south southwest wind around 10 mph becoming west northwest in the afternoon. Between a quarter and half-inch of rain is possible.

Tonight, there is a 10 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 7 p.m. There may be patchy fog after 5 a.m. The low will be around 54 with a north northwest wind of 5 to 9 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Monday, there will be patchy fog before 9 a.m., with a high near 79 and a south wind of 3 to 7 mph, the weather service said.

Tuesday, there is a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a high near 80, the weather service said.

Volunteers from Holy Family Catholic Church, Kansas City, Kansas, are preparing for the annual Slovenefest, which will be held Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Monsignor Mejak Hall and Holy Family School grounds, 513 Ohio. The event will include a traditional Slovenian dinner, music and family entertainment. The funds raised will support Holy Family Church. The festival begins after the 4 p.m. Mass on Sept. 28 at Holy Family Church, 274 Orchard St., Kansas City, Kansas. The festival from 5 to 10 p.m. Sept. 28 includes children’s and adult games, cultural booth, souvenirs, a silent auction, authentic Slovenian food including sarma (stuffed cabbage rolls), poljene paprika (stuffed peppers), krvavica (a specialty sausage), Slovenian potato salad and green beans. Tamburitza music from Hravatski Obicaj is featured from 5 to 6 p.m., and Slovenian polkas by the Brian McCarty Band are planned from 6 to 9 p.m.

A taco dinner will be served from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 1007 Southwest Blvd., Kansas City, Kansas. The cost of the dinner is $7. The event includes music from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. by Stranded in the City. The Holy Name Divas are sponsoring the event, which will benefit scholarships and projects.

Festivities include home made traditional Mexican food: tacos, tamales, menudo and pastries. Enjoy Folkloric dancers, traditional Mariachi Mexican music, children and adult games. All money raised supports Catholic education for children at St. Mary-St. Anthony Catholic Church.

KCKCC golfers join Special Olympians for golf event

There were winners all around as Kansas City Kansas Community College golfers joined with Kansas Special Olympians for an afternoon of golf Friday.

Nearly a dozen Special Olympians played nine holes of golf with the Blue Devils, family members and others as part of the Eastern Kansas Regional held at Smiley’s Golf Course in Lenexa. Other Special Olympians took part in a series of activities including putting, chipping and long drive competitions highlighted by a presentation of medals.

“Everyone had a real good time,” KCKCC golf coach Gary Shrader said. “There was a lot of cheering and high-fiving. Those kids are really special, very caring and loving. I know our players enjoyed it. When they were offered the invitation to join the event, they jumped at it. No hesitation whatever.”

Blue Devil players taking part included sophomore Cam Riley of Liberal and freshmen Jacob Hall of Tonganoxie, Keegan Ellington of Andover Central, Dylan Freund of Cheney, Mark Towey of Wichita’s Bishop Carroll and Kellen Welsh of Olathe West.
