T-Bones beat Lincoln, 6-0

by Luke Schrock

The Kansas City T-Bones (24-22) beat the Lincoln Saltdogs (22-26) 6-0 to force a rubber match in game three on Sunday afternoon in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The T-Bones ignited on Saturday night at Haymarket Park, recovering after Friday’s 9-4 loss as Tommy Collier (5-3) picked up the win to force the rubber match.

Collier pitched seven solid innings with 5 hits, 2 walks, and 9 strikeouts, which is the fifth time a starter has gone seven innings this season. Brian Ellington and Carlos Diaz also had clean outings to close it off.

Daniel Nava and Shawn O’Malley had great days at the plate. Both had two hits and three RBIs. Dylan Tice kept his hit streak strong by extending it to 12 games after his leadoff single in the fifth inning and scoring off Daniel Nava’s double to score the fourth run of the game.

The Saltdogs answered with seven hits as a team, but they struggled to string together offense. Collier shut down Teodoro Martinez after his three-hit game Friday night with Martinez only getting one hit in Saturday’s game.

Cody Regis was the only multi-hit player for Lincoln as Kyle Kinman (1-3) lost his second start against Kansas City this season. The last time Kinman pitched against the T-Bones he threw four innings with eight hits and three walks on May 22 when Kansas City won at home 9-8 against the Saltdogs.

The T-Bones return home to play the St. Paul Saints on Tuesday night July 9th part of a six-game homestand at 7:05 p.m.

Fire destroys church building in Turner

A fire overnight destroyed the Wyandotte Tabernacle Church building, 1229 S. 59th St., in the Turner area of Kansas City, Kansas.

Pastor Mark Sanders said it is a total loss for the church building.

Fire investigators are looking into the cause of the fire, and Pastor Sanders said the cause might be electrical. The church was built around 1970.

According to a social media post by the police chief, a passerby saw flames coming from the basement of the church and called the Fire Department. When firefighters arrived, the church was completely engulfed in flames.

A Fire Department spokesman stated the fire call came in at 1:50 a.m. Sunday. Crews saw heavy flames venting from the roof of the structure and initiated an attack on the fire, the spokesman stated.

There was a partial collapse of the roof and crews went into a defensive mode, the spokesman stated. Additional crews were called in to assist.

There were minor injuries to two firefighters, who were taken to the hospital, the spokesman stated. The fire is still under investigation, according to the spokesman.

Wyandotte Tabernacle Church has a food pantry once a month, on the first Saturday, that serves 800 to 950 people, Pastor Sanders said.

While the church building is destroyed, the church has a separate activity and youth building still standing at the same location.

Yohan Croizet scored Sporting Kansas City’s only goal for the second straight game, but this time the defense made it stand up, giving Sporting a 1-0 home win against the Chicago Fire on Saturday night.

Sporting got on the board in the 14th minute when Felipe Gutierrez stole the ball on Kansas City’s end of the field and launched a long, accurate pass forward into the path of Croizet, streaking toward the goal.

Chicago goalkeeper Kenneth Kronholm came out to the edge of the penalty area to challenge Croizet, but not quickly enough to prevent him from slotting the ball inside the left post.

“I just tried my chance, and I scored,” said Croizet after the game. “Good for me and good for the team.”

Sporting had several opportunities to build on its lead in the remainder of the game. Daniel Salloi had a shot bounce just wide in the first half, and another narrowly blocked in the second half. Also in the second half, Felipe Gutierrez had a rebound fall at his feet near the edge of the 6-yard box, but hit the goalpost on his attempt.

Besides the result, Sporting found two other bright spots in the game. The first was the return of forward Johnny Russell, back from missing several games with a hamstring injury to come on as a substitute in the 70th minute.

The other bright spot was the play of midfielder Gedion Zelalem, making his first start at Children’s Mercy Park. Zelalem was successful at advancing the ball up the left side and finding Salloi and Gutierrez in open space on the attacking end.

“I started against Salt Lake, and I thought I was just playing it too safe, and that’s not me,” said Zelalem. “I’m a guy that takes risks to play forward. Just learning from that game and me confident in myself. Just going for it.”

Sporting KC will head to Vancouver for their next match on July 13. Their next home game will be on July 20 at 7:30 p.m. against Real Salt Lake.
