Salvation Army, YMCAs, UG, libraries open cooling shelters

The Salvation Army in the Kansas City area has announced its community centers are open as cooling shelters from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17.

The area is under an excessive heat warning from 1 p.m. today through Saturday evening.

It is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.

The YMCAs in Greater Kansas City also will be open to the community from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, according to an announcement on the YMCA website. Anyone may come into the YMCA facilities during these hours. ( https://kansascityymca.org/ )

Guests should bring a photo ID and check in at the Welcome Center when they arrive, according to the website. Children 15 years old and younger must be accompanied by an adult 18 or older. Teens 16 and older may visit unaccompanied by an adult.

The YMCAs are open as cooling centers only when there is an Excessive Heat Warning from the National Weather Service.

The Providence-Ball Family Center YMCA is located at 86th and Parallel Parkway in Kansas City, Kansas. It will be open as a cooling center from 1 to 4 p.m. on days when there is an Excessive Heat Warning.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Public Libraries also are open to the public today through the evening. Those who go to the library are asked to participate in a library activity, such as reading. Sleeping is not allowed in the library.

The Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., is open until 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday; from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Also open to the public is the South Branch Library, 3104 Strong, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd, is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library, 4501 West Drive, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. the third Saturday of each month, and closed Sundays. The Turner Community Library, 831 S. 55th, is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and closed on Sunday. They include the Armourdale Community Center, 730 Osage, 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; Eisenhower Community Center, 2901 N.72nd St., 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday; Joe E. Amayo Argentine Community Center, 2810 Metropolitan Ave., 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday; Beatrice Lee Community Center, 1310 N. 10th St., 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday; Kane Community Center, 3130 N. 122nd St., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and closed Saturday and Sunday; as well as KCK City Hall lobby, 701 N. 7th St., 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; Willa Gill Center, 645 Nebraska, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and holidays.

The Turner Recreation Commission center, 831 S. 55th, will be open from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and closed on Sunday.

In Bonner Springs, facilities that are open as cooling centers include: Bonner Springs Library, 201 N. Nettleton, Bonner Springs, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday; Bonner Springs Community Center, 200 E. 3rd St., Bonner Springs, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, seniors only at this time, age 55 and older; Bonner Springs Family YMCA, 2251 S. 138th St., Bonner Springs, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. only on days the National Weather Service issues an Excessive Heat Warning.

Also, the Bonner Springs Aquatic Park at 1200 S. 134th St., Bonner Springs, will be open during swim hours, noon to 7 p.m. Sunday through Saturday. A fee is required for this pool.

Parkwood Pool, 950 Quindaro Blvd., will be open from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday, and 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. A fee is required unless the temperature is 100 degrees or higher.

Free spray parks are open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily until Labor Day. THey include Eisenhower Spray Park, 2901 N. 72nd St, behind Eisenhower Middle School; Heathwood Park, North 10th and Parallel Parkway; and Pierson Spray Park, 1800 S. 55th St.

St. Paul beats T-Bones with walk-off grand slam

The Kansas City T-Bones (28-26) came into St. Paul (36-20) looking for a win on the road, but the dynamic St. Paul offense created fireworks with a walk-off grand slam to take game one, 9-7.

The T-Bones scored in the first inning. Shawn O’Malley gave KC the lead with an RBI single that would score Dylan Tice. The rally would continue after Casey Gillaspie smoked the baseball down the right field line to score Shawn O’Malley, giving the T-Bones a 2-0 lead just a half inning into the game.

The Saints offense is not first in the league in hits by chance as they would also put a run on the board via the base hit from Josh Allen. The Saints kept the heat coming as Jeremy Martinez laced one into the left field corner to tie the ball game at two runs apiece through only one inning of play.

The T-Bones bats were on fire in the second inning as well as Dylan Tice drove in Taylor Sparks, Mason Davis strolled into home plate after a called balk on Saints pitcher Jordan Jess, and the T-Bones took a 4-2 lead.

St. Paul tied it in the bottom of the inning. After a Chris Baker single, two runs scored to tie the ball game at 4-4, two innings into the ball game. As soon as it seemed like both teams could break double digits in under five innings, both teams made a complete turnaround, going scoreless in innings three through six.

The T-Bones broke the silence in the seventh inning after a lined shot to center from Christian Correa wiped the loaded bases clean, giving the T-Bones a 7-4 lead. St. Paul answered the call, scoring a run on a passed ball cutting the T-Bone lead to 7-5.

The T-Bones seemed to have a win in the bag, but St. Paul’s Josh Allen had other plans as Allen smashed a walk-off grand slam after three Carlos Diaz walks before Allen’s at-bat. St. Paul took game one by a score of 9-7.

St. Paul’s relief pitcher Ryan Smith was credited the win, improving to 1-0, and KC’s Carlos Diaz got the loss as he moves to 0-1.

The T-Bones will continue their mid-week series against the St. Paul Saints in game two of the series Wednesday afternoon. The game will be on the T-Bones Broadcast Network at http://mixlr.com/t-bones-baseball/ with the first pitch at 1:05 p.m.

Shooting reported near 64th and Muncie Court

Kansas City, Kansas, police reported that a victim was shot Tuesday night while getting into her vehicle in the 6400 block of Muncie Court in Kansas City, Kansas.

She was taken to a hospital with a non-life-threatening injury, according to a police spokesman.

Several blocks away, in a separate incident overnight in the 700 block of North 62nd Street, police said a victim reported that an unknown suspect shot into the victim’s home once. The home was occupied at the time, according to a police spokesman.

Police do not believe that the two incidents are related. No suspects are in custody at this time, the spokesman stated. Anyone with information is asked to call the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department or TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
