BPU accepting comments on resource plan

The Board of Public Utilities is accepting public comments on the draft 2019 Integrated Resource Plan.

The planning process involves consideration of demand-side options in addition to traditional supply-side options in meeting the power needs of the electrical system, according to BPU officials. The planning focuses on the need to seek and evaluate opportunities for savings of demand and energy in addition to evaluating traditional supply resources.

The on-going planning process sis updated as conditions, price costs, technologies and power requirement change, according to the BPU. The object of the planning is to find a least cost solution to supply customers with the amount and quality of electric service they desire while at the same time promoting the utility’s long-term financial health.

BPU is required by law to file the Integrated Resource Plan with Western Area Power Administration (WAPA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Energy, and update the plan every five years. BPU also must submit annual progress reports and the status of its IRP. The current report available online is the BPU’s 2019 IRP draft.

Public comments on the BPU draft report will be accepted for 30 days from July 19. Comments may be forwarded to the settlement analyst, Andrew Ferris, by mail or email.

Paper print copies of the draft 2019 IRP are available to the public on request to SPP Settlement Analys, Board of Public Utilities, 312 N. 65th St., Kansas City, KS 66102, Attn: Andrew Ferris.

Electronic copies are available by submitting requests to [email protected].

Electronic copies also are available on the BPU’s website at https://www.bpu.com/portals/0/pdf/2019-integrated-resource-plan-review-201907.pdf.
